I'm a huge horror fan and I LOVED it!
having seen many horror movies, I'm not really phased by 'gory' scenes, but more so the plot behind it. I actually really enjoyed the plot and rather intrigued that shit like this may actually go on in the world. the 'gory' parts were not that bad and probably would've been more enjoyable if they actually looked real. :P --Joanne :P |

perhaps on the surface, but deep down, I'm really an angry, morbid person. :) PS. I'm actually a Filipino-born Chinese girl. Quote:
hahaha, I was skeptical of the eye scene.... unless she had a huge abscess behind her eye, it was hard to take that "goo" seriously. --Joanne :P |

I was just chatting about this movie this afternoon.
Honestly what does one get out of watching a movie like this? It can't be as creepy as 'Silence of the Lambs' which messes with your head a bit. This movie doesn't really do anything original. Like when the guy grabs the drill I'm pretty sure I know where it is headed. No pun intended. But if the guy actually decides to shove the drill on the shoulder joint and moves it around while it is on then I'd give them points for originality. But seriously... other than pure shock/gorss out factor what does this movie do? I did watch Saw and I did enjoy how the movie played out and how it ended. I'm sure this one won't be as satisfying. |

I just saw it.
The story is interesting. But Eli Roth has a long way to go before he can be a truly great horror director. I know a lot of guys would disagree with me on this but the amount of boobs in this movie is ridiculous. Seriously, several times in the film it's like a scene was built just to show boobs. Sex is good within a movie, but I think it goes overboard in this film. The gore... for a mainstream American movie, I'll say it's pretty gory. But a lot of the things I heard about the movie being nauseating and puke-inducing seems like it was nothing but hype. Yes, the thought of the horrible thing that happens in the movie makes me cringe, but the make up was lacking. The severed body parts, for the most part, looked a little on the fake side. But I do give Roth points for one of the most memorable horror moments I've seen: (SPOILER) cutting a girl's dangling eye from the optic nerve, then out gushes the goop. I'm not sure how biologically true it is, but that scene is gold. The acting was decent. Although the European actor who played Oli seemed out of place. Why did he have to be in his 30's? I don't see how he really moved the movie other than being the most promiscuous and mouthy. I guess he was comic relief... if you can call it that. The actors' best moment is when they were sitting in the torture chair. You can really see the fear and pain. As a horror/thriller, this movie fails. Roth did a better job of creating a tense atmosphere in "Cabin Fever." With this one, it seems he was just trying to show us the gore, and tries to create suspense through several pans of the torture devices. There are no edge-of-your-seat moments here. Even the (SPOILER) chase--for lack of a better word--scene near the movie's end does little to push you up from your seat. I'd say this can be a rental. You won't miss out on anything by not watching it in the theatre. |
