What originally hooked you into the DJing scene?

Always a musician, DJing became the new outlet once my passion for electronic music surfaced around 1998-1999.

What type of music do you specialize in?

Techno, tech house, minimal. Basically, all forms of techno - I try not to be held in by labels and just play what moves me.

Have you got any funny/horrific DJing stories?

My very first gig, I brought in the mix, was totally rocking it, brought in the new track, took the first one out and suddenly couldn't feel any bass and realized there was lots of dead air. I looked around frantically for a minute, then looked down and realized the crossfader wasn't over! Needless to say, I don't use crossfaders any longer!

What do you like the most about DJing?

Dropping the perfect track at the perfect time, and seeing a whole room of people go nuts, with huge smiles on their faces.

What does your DJ name signify?

I wanted to make my own slipmats and i thought it would be cool if i found the chemical name for vinyl and put it on the slipmat. While i was looking for it, i was also looking for a name and as i thought about how vinyl was made i thought of the name Chemical Laboratory. Obviously this is a bit lengthy, so i shortened it to Khem Lab. After which it was shortened further to Khemlab.

I produce under the name John Norman, which is just my first and second name.

John is a Producer, Remixer, and DJ, as well as Manager of A&R for Canadian dance music label 4Play Trax.

Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, and currently residing in London, England, John Norman is pushing techno sounds to new places. His sound has been refined over many years of avid pursuit of that which is driving yet laid back, full yet minimalist. The result is a sound unlike any other, filling dancefloors around the world.

His quickly growing arsenal of original tracks and remixes now include releases with 7Stars Music, 4PlayTrax, and UNT! Records, including several coming out in early 2012. His tracks have seen support from international heavy hitters including Markus Schulz, M.I.K.E, Wally Lopez, Marcella, and Jesse Voorn, and he shows no signs of looking back.

His sound cultivated over years of hosting some of the most memorable events in the Canadian Prairies, bringing in artists such as Frankie Bones, Signum, Ronski Speed, Bryan Jones and Patrick DSP to name a few. Literally starting out as the kid hauling his huge record bag to open decks, John quickly gained reputation for impeccable tight mixing blending sounds together for a unique approach to techno, minimal and tech house, but knowing no bounds. With this, he began booking events throughout his hometown and across central Canada, Toronto, Montreal, and the Northern US.

Over this time his sound caught the ear of radio stations such as puredj.com in Holland, the former CityBeat Radio in Scotland, Undergroundradio.tv (formerly Miami Beatz Radio)), and Canadian Techno.fm. In addition, his mixes have been featured on stations from England, Brazil, Croatia, Chile, Bulgaria, and was one of the final featured guests on DJ Preach’s Transatlantic Radio show who stated that John’s “mix of tech house will take you to a place you’ve never been”. Now in its second year, John hosts a monthly mix series Original Language Global Session playing some of the finest house and techno available, which can be found in iTunes podcast section.

You can expect John to push his productions and DJ sets to new heights as his obsession with sound continues, taking influence not only from electronic music history but alsofrom the everyday and spreading his brand of music the world over.
