What originally hooked you into the DJing scene?
Always a musician, DJing became the new outlet once my passion for electronic music surfaced around 1998-1999.

What type of music do you specialize in?
Techno, tech house, minimal. Basically, all forms of techno - I try not to be held in by labels and just play what moves me.

Have you got any funny/horrific DJing stories?
My very first gig, I brought in the mix, was totally rocking it, brought in the new track, took the first one out and suddenly couldn't feel any bass and realized there was lots of dead air. I looked around frantically for a minute, then looked down and realized the crossfader wasn't over! Needless to say, I don't use crossfaders any longer!

What do you like the most about DJing?
Dropping the perfect track at the perfect time, and seeing a whole room of people go nuts, with huge smiles on their faces.

What does your DJ name signify?
I wanted to make my own slipmats and i thought it would be cool if i found the chemical name for vinyl and put it on the slipmat. While i was looking for it, i was also looking for a name and as i thought about how vinyl was made i thought of the name Chemical Laboratory. Obviously this is a bit lengthy, so i shortened it to Khem Lab. After which it was shortened further to Khemlab.
I produce under the name John Norman, which is just my first and second name.

John Sparrow, known as John Norman or DJ Khemlab in the music world, is the phenom bent on turning the Techno scene on its ear. As a producer under the name John Norman, he creates original productions and remixes with a unique, rhythmic blend of sounds, pulling together beats and vocals for a mass of dance floor excitement. As a DJ, Khemlab is known to be versatile in his programming, solid in his mixing and to bring people to their feet with his energy filled performances. Expect funky basslines, hot vocals, and crazy drum sequences as he meshes all forms of techno on 3 decks with a style not heard elsewhere. He hosts radio shows on the Dutch station puredj.com, CityBeat Radio in Edinburgh, and the Montreal-based techno.fm, and has been featured on Transatlantic Radio Worldwide with DJ Preach, Croatian National Radio, TopWebRadio in Brazil, Santiago Radio in Chile, Drive 'til 5 on 90.1 FM in Vancouver, and party107.com as well as Amplified Radio which plays to over 25 radio stations around the world. He has also had the pleasure of opening for such international acts as Judge Jules, Preach, DJ Dan, Deko-ze and Kristoff, as well as playing alongside BK, Marco V, John Selway, Frankie Bones, Signum, Ronski Speed, Bryan Jones, Patrick DSP, and Nuclear Ramjet.

John’s reach extends beyond the stage and studio as well; in 2003 he became a founding member of Crown Productions along with friends DJ Dizz and Dubbz, helping to re-rejuvenate the then-ailing Winnipeg electronic music scene. Crown have become one of the most well-respected promotion companies in Winnipeg, throwing such events as the legendary Evil Dead, Where the Wild Things Are, the Weird Science series, and Winnipeg's most successful New Years' Eve event, Back to the Future which celebrated its' sixth anniversary in 2008. Crown have since gone on to embark on Artist Management as well, representing some top talent from the Canadian Prairies and gaining a reputation for professional artist representation and management across North America.
