sleizure - 100% cheapcore guaranteed fri july 19 1am

newcastle.. a short 150 something or other kilometers away from the big lights of sydney, has most of its blue collared folk working in an industrious fashion, on ports handling coal and working in the steel works. because of the close proximity to bigger cities, newcastle contains some incredibly creative, and artistic beings - hosting writing conferences, film festivals focusing on incredibly alternative new media and art galleries.

while youths moved to other larger "important" cities, a group of 3 friends known as mark newlands (overcast), david melo (disassembler) and aaron lubinski (xylocaine) stayed local, met up and experimented with making different sequenced sounds..

armed with amiga 500 computers, the newly formed "nasenbluten" created compilations of original works and distributed them on cassette tapes under the home made label "dEad GIrl" while playing local house parties. a mixture of breakbeat and harder edged dance music from what was commonly heard in the electronic music scene started to turn some heads locally and forced a drastic change... something to be truly said about 8 bit 22khz mono.

fast forward to august 19th, 1994, a carton arrives on the steps of a house located in the suburbs of NCL. The box contains 102 badly mastered white label copies of the first release..It takes 4 hours to mark the poorly mastered release with 'FIST 01: Newcastle Hardcore Volume 1' and the slogan "100% No Soul, Guaranteed" and marked the beginning of Bloody Fist as a label. It was met with much malice and hatred in Australia when released, due mainly to the extensive shit-canning of the local scene included on the A4 insert. Copies of the record were personally delivered to a handful of stores in Sydney and Newcastle one week after they were pressed, where they sat unnoticed for quite some time. The A4 insert however, made it's way in and out of hundreds of fax machines across Sydney, with many people shocked and horrified at these Newcastle tossers making themselves known in one of the most obnoxious ways possible.

Other like minded NCL residents noticed, such as brothers Gavin and Warren Burke, known as the Syndicate, 14 year old Ryan Leeman who liked to be known as Embolism and Netas whos real life label was Scott Young. Newcastle was angry, and continued to spawn dozens more artists due to this birth and awareness of "hardcore techno". these artists were able to outlet their frustration of a blue collar city, with little to do on the label, sometimes at a blistering tempo of 240 beats per minute.

Bloody Fist came out hard and continued to drill harder and harder on the music scene in Australia calling out other artists, event promoters and styles of music, when they became noticed by Industrial Strength frontman Lenny Dee at a local event. It wasn't long before Nasenbluten became known globally with the release of 4 EPs in the coming years featuring the comical yet groundbreaking tracks "Cocksucker", "We've got the Balls", and "Machete". Fusing the sound of Hardcore Gangster Rap with extremely amplified breakbeats, the defining sound of Cheapcore was born. Shortly thereafter other Bloody Fist artists became signed to international labels.

to say that todays djs, producers have not been influenced by this would be an outright lie. with the 35 bloody fist records going for upwards of $400 in the market place and many other prolific releases available, most will tell you that the sound from newcastle changed their view of music altogether and forced them to look outside the box.

members of bloody fist toured europe in 1996 and continued to put out releases, each one better than the last while focusing in the latter years on hard breakbeats with artists such as epsilon, whose unique sound fused drum and bass with c64 chip music, paul blackout - still to this day releasing some of the hardest drum'n'bass to be found, and the seminal release by overcast known as '3pm eternal' - making 909s and breakbeats never sound so good.

all good things come to an end, and on october 1st, 2004 at 3pm, bloody fist closed their doors forever, ending an era in the hardcore techno music scene. some of the artists have moved on to other labels, but the majority of them have simply moved on altogether.

this weekend on sleizure we will be showcasing the bloody fist camp of artists - to ensure that this sound can be spread as far as possible. this will be a special set dragging out many tapes, cd's and vinyl to give an accurate depiction of what was known as "pushing the limits" in the early 90s. we'll continue on to the harder edged material towards the latter end of the night for those who like their eardrums.

Sleizure Radio is broadcast every Friday night from 1AM - > LATE from the top of Burnaby Mountain (SFU) and can be accessed on your FM Radio at 90.1. If you have cable you can tune us in at 93.9FM, and for those of you without traditional listening devices - CJSF Radio has a high quality stream available. Our goal is to expose listeners to sounds that have long been forgotten in todays electronic music culture by listening and definitely not for dancing.
