Tornado Joe's Chilliwack -Sound Check
I managed to wangle an hour or so at Tornado Joe's club in Chilliwack, Thursday Jan 20, for a sound check of my DJ equipment.
So around 8:15 to 9 pm I'll be dropping a few funky house tunes, trance, electro, whatever, to see how it all sounds. And with max 6,000 watts, it will be loud if not good! Drop in and have a listen. I'll be on the "wheels of plastic" until the resident, DJ Dave, boots me out, which might be very fast as they normally play country / rock / top 40. I doubt that they'll hit you with cover charge as Thursday is usually a slow night and it's really early. Just say you're there to "help DJ Dave with the sound check". 6 Mb MP3 sample - right click, save target as... :rave: |

Not an electronic night yet or anything near, but maybe something like that can happen later if it gets organized right. Just gettin my foot in the door for a little fun :)
Any promoters or DJs interested in setting up a one-off club event or semi-regular night in the valley? Someone was trying to promote something about a year ago but it didn't get started, they posted here or CV maybe. Quote:

Another "gig" survived!
I played some funky house & house remixes like No Doubt but anytime I got near progressive house & trance (yes I got off a few) the resident DJ started looking very nervous. However it was a good experience to be hooked up to all those watts. I don't think anyone interested in electronic music could be very successfully dropped into the DJ booth in a place like this on an ordinary night, as the regular staff and customers are into more top-40 ish stuff, and not too willing to listen to anything else. The DJing style is also totally different. You'd have to set up a special party night. I'm amazed these small town clubs can run. Almost nobody there on weeknights, and they still need to pay for the heat and several employees. I don't think running cheap drinks nights is a solution, that just brings in heavy drinkers who aren't interested in anything else. |

^ tell dave I say hi if he's still managing the bar.
I used to play there 3 nights a week in 2001 the system is off the hook so good for you for getting some experience. Top 40 mixing is a different beast, less technical but a much harder job for the dj. The anthem that rocked the club every time with out fail..... California Love - 2pac do they still have the dancing cages in the club for the ladies to get all nasty? |

I haven't seen a cage but maybe they have it stashed away. They have a mechanical bull they bring out some nights that the ladies might go topless on, like a week ago, she was cute :)
Dave is still there (& was nice enough to let me on) & he DJs many nights too although a guy Kelly was also on last night. Funny thing though, sometimes they can get lots of girls on the dance floor & no guys, no fault of theirs but the guys are there for cheap drinks I think. |
