Art Of Beatz Transmission: We Are One

Art Of Beatz: We Are One

It cannot be said that we've ever been at a loss when
it comes to having a reason to celebrate, but hey,
this is a big one. One year ago this week, Vancouver's
top source for electronic music on the radio went to
air and the airwaves have been funkier for it ever
since. Birthday's can be fun, right?

The show? Art Of Beatz, Thursday nights at midnight on
CFRO, 1027 FM, Vancouver's community Co-op radio.

The idea: To promote Vancouver's vastly divergent and
exploding underground of electronic music of all
genres. From house to hardcore, breaks to ambient and
from 0 to two hundred BPM, we're there.
Internationally known acts like Gavin Hardkiss, DJ
Abstract and Charlotte the Baroness have hit the
airwaves via AOB alongside local favorites like Tyler
Stadius, Pacific, Tom Thomas and Nicky Delgado, and
that's just to name a handful that have graced our
studios over the course of 52 shows.

In fact shoot, why don't I name them all?

Nancy Kyd, Link, Torment, Mirka, Psidream, BinHex,
Phoenix Olivia, Jay Auto, Tom Thomas, Jacob Cino, Rez,
Angst, Leanne, Kris Palesch, Noah Pred, Reverse Crew,
Naasko, James L Venable, Soda, Michael Red, Wilson
Hart, Gavin Hardkiss, Crankenstein, DJ Abstract, DJ
Sep, Dr. J, Qzen, Nick Philip, Buzz Roswell, DF Tram,
Charlotte the Baroness, Matty, DJ Mayday, Robert
Robot, Square Root of Evil, Tyler Stadius, Gavin
Froome, Soundmurderer, Wood, DJ Soo, Gel-Sol,
Kaliflower, Krown, Vernon, Mechwarrior, Alison Barth,
Danjel Van Tijn, Tobias Van Veen, Nicky Delgado,
Queensyze, Nudlz, Team Trainwreck, Luke McKeehan,
Jimungle, Bias, Tusk, ICLigt.

Hosts Kuma, Eve and Motomasa can be found killing it
all over Vancouver. Motomasa on Friday nights at the
Marine Club at the freshly launched Nautical Fridays
with Wilson Hart, bringing a distinctly soulful brand
of house the the masses. Eve can be found at the
city's newest jungle night, Elements Sundays at the
Tokyo Lounge, mashing up bassbins. She can also be
found getting deep and heady alongside Kuma at
Vancouver's only ambient and IDM night, Firelight
Lullabies at the Jewel of India, Friday nights in
Gastown.

Three different DJs with one mission: to shake the
head and the hips with the finest that Vancouver has
to offer. And just because we've gotten older, doesn't
mean we're going to be resting on our laurels.

This week, we celebrate our first birthday with an
upfront mix from the deepest heart of South London.
Dubstep, 2-Step, Grime. Call it what you like but it's
what's powering the pulse of London's airwaves and
we're bringing it to you via noted DJ, producer, sonic
theorist and pirate radio host, kode9
(Rephlex/Tempa/Hyperdub).

Hailing from an alien land, kode9 washed up noisily in
South London in 1997. He is now resident DJ at Fwd>>
at London's Plastic People, and has been hosting a
weekly show on Rinse FM 100.3 (Thursdays 7-9pm) since
early 2003. He is known for his dubbed out skank and
prolonged twisted mixing style. He hosted the
'Hyperdub Transmission' show on groovetech.com for 2
years and promoted the Hyperdub sessions in Brixton in
2001. Since then he has been spotted at the Notting
Hill Carnival, all over Europe and on his Planet Grime
tour in the summer of 2003.

In 2004, Kode9 set up the Hyperdub label to release an
armory of accelerated and decelerated dub and
dancehall influenced beats featuring the enigmatic
Daddi Gee on vox. The label started with the highly
acclaimed 'Sign of the Dub', a strange beatless cover
of Prince's 'Sign of the Times' and 'Stalker', a seedy
mutation of the Junior Boys' 'High Come Down'. The
second release forthcoming is 'Spit' and is an
unlikely version of a militant rap classic. Check also
for Kode9 releases on Tempa. Kode9 set up the
hyperdub.com project in 2001 and on the website www.dubplate.net. http://www.kode9.com/

March continues to sizzle as Rob Rizk will join us to
drop some New york style afro funk, Vancouver drum and
bass legend, Gnosis (HQ Communications will go
leftfield on our asses, Toronto's break beat scientist
0=0 (just signed to Mu-Ziq's Planet-Mu label) will
drop an exclusive mix and Tyler Lewis will bring us
his signature prog-tech-tribal riddims fresh from
Winter Music Conference.

Did I mention that April may will feature nothing but
live P.A's too? Stay tuned!

Art Of Beatz: Cuz if you don't know (or if y'aaaaino
as they say in the dirty dirty), you better tune in
and find out.
