Tonight On Art Of Beatz Radio: Angst (Soundbombing.com/JSK)

Tonight!

Hour 1: Angst (Soundbombing.com/20hz)

Originally hailing from the Southeastern United States, ANGST has been rocking crowds all over the U.S. and Canada since the mid-90s. With his deep crates of classic and nuskool jungle mashups, he always comes correct with a grip of exclusive dubplates and extensive collection of the toughest beats around. ANGST combines the arts of jungle and turntablism into a ruffneck style of rapid fire mixing and beat juggling all while covering a diverse selection ranging from dancehall influenced jams to hardstep amens. In April 2004 he founded the Relick, which is now one of one of North America’s premier ragga jungle nights. In addition to his DJing, ANGST co-owns and operates a Vancouver-based full spectrum breaks label, TwentyHz. TwentyHz has released or has forthcoming releases from artists such as: DJ Wood, Wicked Lester, Karma (Soda & Pacific), Marlin, Jimmy Towers, Kia Kadiri and DJ Czech.

Angst is also founder of the Relick, Vancouver's biggest ragga jungle event..we'll let him tell you about it.

History of the Relick

In February of 2004 I linked Jay-Auto with DJ Mayday, who was booking Krinjah's tour. After the success of the Krinjah show in March show, which also happened to be my first booking at Automatic, Jay-Auto approached me at Good Sundays about starting a monthly dedicated to ragga-jungle and the classics. Naturally, I was down to do this. We decided that it would take place on the last Sunday of every month at the Lotus Sound Lounge. The Relick was officially launched on the last Sunday of April 2004.

Our first few shows only had 30-50 people; however we quickly realized that, despite a minimal turnout, the vibe was amazing. Both DJs and patrons alike were having a blast coming down to hear and get down to jungle music that spanned from the early 90s to brand new, unreleased dubplates. The most surprising thing about the crowd was that it wasn’t the usual DnB crowd that you might find at Automatic, it was a good mix of people from all walks. We continued to invite local/regional jungle DJs such as Michael Red, DJ Owns, Dialekt, Condition Red, DJ Bavin and Jawbone to come down. All of them, especially the older guys who have been into it for awhile, were more than a little impressed by the vibe and style of music being pushed. Then came our biggest show to date…

In October of that same year we brought in the one and only Todd Osborne aka Soundmurderer. The place was rammed and on a Sunday too!!! To this day, it’s still one of the liveliest and hypest jungle shows I’ve ever been to. The place was going mad all night long. Todd is an amazing talent and simply murdered the dance. It was official, the Relick had arrived and was here to stay.

Since that show we’ve brought in some of jungle’s hottest talent such as General Malice (who also packed the place), Raggabot Posse and the infamous R.A.W. Our 1 year anniversary in April 2005 featured the top ranked jungle turntablist, R.A.W. Despite a less than stellar turnout, R.A.W. ripped it like only he can and people were left to pick their jaws off the floor as he blew everyone away with a stunning display of skill and showmanship. After the show, Jay and I decided that we were selling our night short by doing the Relick on a Sunday. So we took a month off and re-launched the Relick, with support from the almighty Fixed Crew (Bias and Shamus) on the last Friday of the month at the Met in June 2005. This month will mark the 17th installment of the Relick and we’re very excited to feature N2O / Big Cat recording artist General Malice once again.

Get on it!
