tim and max
okay, i just finished the dark tower 7. here are my thoughts (and for those that haven't read it, but want too and are crashing my hey you thread, be careful, because i might spoil some things).
although it took me awhile to get into the whole 'stephen king' in his own book thing, i kind of liked it near the end. i was only really uneasy with the idea if he was supposed to be the 'creator' of it all, instead of just the messenger or a scribe of something that actual exists. as for what lies at the top of the dark tower, i think king said it best himself in the afterword when he wrote that yes, it's not entirely satisfying, but it's the right ending. ka is a wheel, if i may quote the book. and that idea makes this ending so perfect. i was really worried when getting near the end, worried that there would actually BE something in the top of the tower, something tangible, because he could never write something that would be right in that way. so i guess i really did like the ending, i think it says a lot about the theme of the books, being that the journey is important, and that everything comes around again. i'm sad it's all over :( |

are you spying on me?
when i first read the ending i was pissed off that the top of the dark tower was just some weird Time portal that sent him back to the beginning of the entire series (oops, forget that part if you haven't read it). then i started to think about it with what SK said in the after word and i have to agree that it is AN ending. but then i started thinking of the horn. roland didn't have the horn at the beginning of the gunslinger book but now he has it. that means that everytime he gets to the dark tower he goes back to the beginning of his Life and takes the horn a little bit closer. that means that sooner or later he's going to get that mother fucker to the top. what then? what then? |

yeah, the horn is a really important part of that ending. it shows that it isn't just a never ending loop that he is destined to follow. that there is hope for an ending for him. that's why i like it.
i don't think i would have been satisfied if SK had shown us what was in the top of the tower. it would never have lived up to the hype. and he was totally aware of that, since he was all "you should stop reading now or you'll be disappointed" before roland reached the tower. anyway, i really really dug this book. after a falter a bit on number five and finding his footing in number six, he was right back at the top in number seven. dandelo was freakin' awesome, i loved that part. king's imagination never ceases to amaze me. |

i hated it how everything was a coincidence.
oh nos! which way do we go, jake? go left, roland. there's a sign with a nineteen letters on it. i'm just going to guess that this is a word password operated door. i wonder what the password is? maybe it's that word that susannah told me in that waking dream? oh, it is! and what do you know? it's nineteen letters too. that stuff really bothered me. |

it's weird because he even seemed aware of it, kinda of played it up. like when susannah found that note in dandelo's bathroom and it said: here comes the deus ex machina!
thousands of pages, seven books (not too mention the ones outside the actual series, but still related) and i think i can allow him a few blunders and a bit of laziness at times. it's not perfect, but it's good. |
