Resident IT Gurus...

So I'm totally not going to upgrade to Vista and I don't really have a need to stay with Windows anymore.

I've heard a lot of talk about Ubuntu... what's the deal? Should I choose this over another distro? What about SuSE or Slackware?

There's plenty of spare time to waste so I'm probably going to turn this Box into a Dual Boot since my g/f isn't hugely schooled in the ways of Alternative OS's.

Info, Facts and Hints are most appreciated.

usually the main differences between all the linux flavors are the packages installed, support, and ease of installation

if you're just starting out with linux for the first time i hear suse has the easiest installation out of any distro and is geared towards people making the "switch".

ive also heard a lot of good things about ubuntu and slackware especially. best thing to do is to fuck around with all 3 and see which one you prefer the most, although in the end you'll probably see that the differences are minimal if you're a novice user

if you want to sample the distros before actually doing the install on your HDD - you might want to look at using a virtual machine - provided of course your system can handle it. As far as recommendations goes, it’s been a while since ive used linux, used to like red hat but I don’t think its the same any more. What do you want it for? Just typical usage? Assuming you understand all the potential issues you can encounter when opting for something less standard......
Going linux with out a good reason is pretty damn geeky IMO.

Further to Erik's question, I am in the same boat.

My desktop is still a fairly stellar machine. But it seems to be dying a slow death, at least the software is. When I installed XP several years ago, it was a pirated copy. But I want to get away from the pirated software.

I have considered Linux, as well, I am cheap and didn't want to pay for a new OS, but all of my work is done with Windows now, and I don't want/have the time to learn a new OS, or deal with compatibility issues.

Is Vista worth the purchase now, or should I just buy XP?

meh, up to you I guess. If I was going to be shelling out the dough I would go vista, provided I meet the system requirements and don’t use any weird applications that don’t run well on vista. I would do a quick audit of what applications you use then google to see if there are any issues with vista, also might be good to do that with any peripherals you have (printers, scanners, camera etc). If its all good, I don’t see why going vista would be a bad idea

It is just for general useage and like Avana said I'd like to get away from using a Pirated Copy of XP since it's becoming a royal pain in my ass whenever there's an update.

I'm familiar with the basics of Linux etc from when I was working with Networking in 2002. But it's been forever since I've touched it.

I WOULD RECCOMEND TRYING A LIVECD FIRST TO SEE IF YOU LIKE IT
KNOPPIX Linux Live CD
THIS IS A FULL LINUX DISTRO ON CD SO THAT YOU DONT NEED TO PUT ANYTHING ON YOUR HD, IT WONT CHANGE ANYTHING ON YOUR HD UNLESS YOU TELL IT TO

IF YOU DO LIKE IT, I WOULD RECCOMEND INSTALLING UBUNTU AS ITS PRETTY MUCH THE DARLING DISTRO RIGHT NOW

JUST REMEMBER THAT LINUX IS SOMETHING YOU LEARN, GOOGLE WILL BE YOUR FRIEND IN FIGURING OUT HOW TO MAKE EVERYTHING WORK

Someone gave me an Ubuntu installation disk, I haven't tried it yet. If I choose to stay with Windows, is it worth keeping XP or should I just get Vista?

what speaks french, has two rule of thumbs and loves giving advice?

If you have to ask 'should i install linux/ubuntu/etc', then you shouldnt install it. Imagine if you had to do a soduku every time you open your fridge, that's linux.

there are virtually no real advantages from upgrading XP to Vista. It looks 'nicer'. Your startup wait time changes. Security is more prevalent. IE7 is default. Media player is more integrated.

ya - I have yet to actually see vista, was just talking to someone about it and apparently the security features are a real pain in the ass. Just figured if your going to pay you mind as well get the latest. Prolly the best thing to do would just get your system cleaned up , contrary to popular belief , the solution to a slow PC doesn’t have to be a fresh install.

THEN WHEN YOU GO TO THE FRIDGE AND WANT TO GET AN ORANGE, THE FRIDGE WILL TELL YOU "WHAT SPECIES OF ORANGE" IN 7 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. THEN IT WILL ASK YOU WHAT KIND OF RIPENESS YOU PREFER THE ORANGE. THEN IT WILL TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THE ORANGE, WHILE JUGGLING IT. THEN IT WILL OFEER TO PEEL IT FOR YOU, BUT ONLY PEEL IT HALF WAY DUE TO DRIVER ISSUES. THEN IT WILL THROW IT AT YOUR FACE. IF YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS THEY WILL TELL YOU THAT THROWING AN ORANGE AT YOUR FACE IS THE BEST WAY TO SERVE UP AND ORANGE, SCIENTISTS HAVE PROVEN IT, AND IF YOU LIKE IT A DIFFERENT WAY YOU'RE STUPID.

IF YOU WANT THE FRIDGE TO HAND YOU THE ORANGE YOU WILL HAVE TO WRITE ALL OF IT DOWN ON A PIECE OF PAPER AND PLACE YOUR INSTRUCTIONS INSIDE THE FRIDGE.

ANYWAYS BY THE END OF THE SHOW YOU FORGET THAT YOU EVEN WANTED TO EAT THE ORANGE.

I love how all the linux-haters are giving advice that's like 2 years old. Awesome.

Ubuntu is pretty much the average-desktop-user's distro these days. Debian based (like Knoppix) but not geared towards a live-CD distro.

Personally I use Fedora Core but I'm looking to move myself to Ubuntu pretty damn quick. All the power of apt-get, none of the annoying have-to-config-every-file-by-hand of debian.

Rawb's about 2 TLDNRs in studlies before he hits my ignore list, btw.

LOLHATERS

NOTE TO EVERYONE:

EVERYBODY THAT WORKS WITH LINUX IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER AS THEIR JOB ISN'T QUALIFIED TO COMMENT ON IT, THERE IS NO WAY YOU COULD FORM AN OPINION ON SOMETHING YOUVE BEEN USING EVERY DAY FOR YEARS

It's a lot easier than VAX/VMS that's for sure.

I think I'll just make a dual-boot for now. Thanks for all the input guys!

forget dual boot, install it as a VM. i think with the new VM software you can actually boot into a VM anyway.
