Most certainly not an expert, but I've made some pretty good attempts at doing the dead face/vampire look before.

I usually just get some white face paint and sponge is all over my face (and neck, but it can get messy) then use purple/red under and around the eyes and sockets. I'd recommend using eye shadow around the eyes, particularly if you have matte colours! Also, adding a slight bluish tinge to the white face should help. Try googling for gory/dead pictures to get some ideas!
