I got someone to do it... but when i got my phone, the current version was 1.1.3 and there was no way of really doing it with software only, you had to use the turbo sim and cut your simcard etc...
i paid 80, and it was worth it... till i had to change my sim card, and now i have to get it unlocked again because i dont know how to cut my sim properly and don't want to risk being without a phone... my iphone has been sitting in it's box for the last month and a bit due to my laziness |

lil donkey - I would get someone to update it to 1.1.4 and you won't even have to cut your sim card. It's a more stable firmware compared to 1.1.3 and fixes a lot of bugs that were mucking up 1.1.3. There are people on craigslist that'll do it for $5 - $20, you paid way too much for your work.

$80 for hyper/turbosim is actually a pretty good price. he did it before the new fw was software unlockable so he had no choice.
imo you shouldnt be paying to hack your iphone... its easy enough to do and theres step-by-step instructions all over the internet. anything someone can do with software that's readily available, you can do. for free. plus once you learn it once it's that much easier to do it in the future. i wouldnt want to pay $5-$20 every time i need some work done with my celly. |

I paid $600 for my phone. I think a $20 upgrade is not a far cry... I wouldn't feel the constant need to an upgrade anyways. I have been riding on 1.1.1 for a long time because of the stability of the firmware. As for phones, I run on the motto: "if ain't broken, don't fix it", but after talking to a bunch of friends on 1.1.4, it seems to be the best firmware. I also need the upgrade to increase my SMS limit (I'm quickly approaching 1000 SMS). I understand where you are coming from though and I was tempted to do it myself so many times. Even downloaded all the programs, my only concern is my phone is I've had my phone jailbroken previously with god knows what program, whereas most of the tutorials are for straight out of box iphones. Those factors can conflict with any new program. Would rather trust someone that's professional to do it.

ouch!
i see what you mean by $20 being peanuts on a $600 mobile, but when 1.1.5/1.1.6/1.2.0 come, are you going to want to pay ~$20 each time? just my opinion but i'd prefer to do it myself so i have a better understanding of the workings of my phone. i jailbreaked/unlocked my buddy's iphone at 1.1.1 but he learned for himself how to keep it updated. its really not difficult and if you have any familiarity with a computer you should have no problems hacking it. and i dont even have one of my own! |

I'm pretty good with computers and I've done shit like this before, so I thought, "what the hell, I'll do this!" So I fired up some video tutorials, blog tutorials and was feeling pretty good on my way to the new firmware. So everything is going fine, until I get a endless chain of code that reads: BSD root: major 2, minor 0. There is a trouble with the BSD subsytem or something, so I attempt to put my iphone into recovery mode. After a few attempts, it sends my phone into restore mode (FINALLY!!), now at least I know it is in a somewhat stable state.. So I figure it will probably be safer to let this guy take care of the rest now that I have it somewhat stable. It's just at the screen where it asks you for a unlocked and activated sim, which I do not have, the tutorial I was watching the guy DID have one. I am sure I can take care of the rest of it now, but I would feel safer to let the guy take a look at it. I've read ones where they didn't use one, but at this point. I've sifted through enough tutorials and trouble shooting sites, I've had enough for the day! hahaha... oh man, what a day... at least I tried ;] Last edited by stabmyhead; Apr 27, 08 at 07:18 AM. |

yes!! So I went to get my phone updated and the guy was great! He was professional and had it done in like 20 minutes. While there, another guy was coming in right after so I knew this guy was reliable and knew his shit. I basically had the first step done and didn't end up fucking up my phone like I thought I did. He was impressed! haha.. so I'm really happy with 1.1.4 firmware right now. This guy is much recommended by me!

$650 for a 16 GB I hope. Otherwise that is way overpriced for 8 GB. You can find tons on craigslist, that's where I got mine. But you may want to wait till after June when they have the massive Apple Developers conference where they will for sure be releasing something new for the iPhone. Firmware 2.0? 3 GB iPhone? Something along those lines. I'd hold out to see what is coming, it is only about a month or so away.
If you are looking for a 8 GB, they go for about $525 - $550 on craigslist, 16 GBs are about $650 - $675. Most come unlocked, or you can get them unlocked, activated and jailbroken for about $10 - $30. There is a place in Aberdeen center in Richmond that apparently sells them too, along with the Gucci and Armani phones. Something to think about. |

^ which is why I am selling mine!
PS Stabby last I checked they were going for $650 on craigslist for 8 gb but that was awhile ago, I just looked again and you're right, so now mine's gonna be $550 :P I think I paid $650 or $700 for mine, I can't remember because my brother got both of ours at the same time but one was more expensive than the other... Edit: 3G release has not actually been confirmed by Apple, btw. But it's pretty safe to assume it'll be available relatively soon. Last edited by galaxie; Apr 28, 08 at 05:09 PM. |
