hey love, how's it going?!
hmmmm well it depends on what kind of photography you want to get into. You could get a really nice film based camera or you could get a really nice digital camera. if you want to get into photography, i'd suggest you get an SLR. they're just manual cameras which allow you control shutter speed, aperture, film speed etc etc. The newer SLRs start at around 500 and the good thing about the new ones is that you can actually switch from manual mode to automatic mode (point-and-shoot...the camera focuses, adjusts everything for you). up until this summer i was using a very old school SLR that my dad used to own. it was really heavy and bulky...so i decided to get a new SLR. i got a Canon Rebel Ti. it's an awesome camera and relatively cheap. but then again, i use film based cameras. they do make digital SLRs though...they let you control everything and, they too, have an option to switch from fully manual mode to fully automatic. the only difference is, there's no film involved, of course. the only set back is...they're kinda pricey. i THINK they cost around 2 grand. i could be wrong. but they are a good investment cuz everything is going digital now. i just read an article and a lot of big companies such as kodak have already started to stop making certain speeds of film and paper cuz the trend towards digital has increased so much. so basically it all depends on how much you want to spend. you can get a really good camera for 500-2000 bucks. i'm just assuming you want to start shooting on 35mm film, yeah? (normal everyday film). cuz they do have media format cameras which use 2 and 1/4 film, 4x5 film and even 8x10 film but those cameras cost 2000 and upwards...and they're quite bulky and tricky to use. but there always is that option as well. sooooooo with all that said...if i had enough money, i'd go with the digital SLR....they might be a little pricey but they're worth it especially because that's what photography is now leading to. industry standards are almost all digital now as well. hopefully that helps! if you need any more help just let me know!! :) -s. |

wow! thanks!
I'm well thanks, yourself? I'm definitely looking for a flim based camera, and all the specs that you've described sound great. My friend's dad tried to convince me to buy digital (he's the head photo manager at london drugs) but no way. Any particular brands or models? I'm thinking anywhere in the $500-700 range. A little more would be ok though. |

Don't buy digital Nat, unless you want to get into the upper-level/high price range cameras (like the G3...etc)
If I were to recommend a fairly decent SLR right now, I'd say the MZ-6 (Pentax) is pretty good...entry level. Check that one out. Don't buy any of the Canon EOS's....my opinion at least. And DO check out the Olympus (the BEST) line... *Jen* |

or if you're willing to spend a little bit more...go with a Nikon...they have really good resale value and stuff down the road.
yay i'm so glad to hear you're not going digital. the fun of photography comes with getting your hands on that film and making prints and getting your hands dirty and stuff! -s. |
