ok, i'm gonna cut you some slack on this one because a) you're Dave b) it took me a long time to figure this one out.

Et al. = latin for "and others"; the al. is an abbreviation, thus the period. I'm not sure what the actual word is but it's used quite commonly for scientific papers and shit like that. I just use it to try to sound smart... I don't think it works.
