okay, i have about 75 pages left in War of the Worlds, so i thought i would write a little thing on what i think so far.
it's oooookay. not as good as i was expecting it to be. you were right about the dry parts...i find that a lot the book reads like an instruction manuel on events that happened. you know what i mean? i haven't really come across many elements that make the story human and involving. there is virtual no character development at all. i read a whole chapter without even knowing that i was reading about the brother's adventures and not the main characters! will update once i finish the book. |

i never said it was 'shitty', i just meant to say it wasn't the best thing i have ever read. it's only 200 pages long, so it will only take up 2 days of my life. besides, i wanted to read it before i saw the film. |

The Time Machine was definitely Well's best novel. It shows alot more imagination and poses some interesting moral questions. War of the Worlds, meh, the book is pretty blah. The original movie is quite good, though. It was made at a time when war and self nuclear annhialation was on everyone's mind to some extent and they conveyed the consequences of global devastation quite nicely through cinema. Also the 1950s scifi sound of the alien weapons blowing everything up was just sooo eerie. Wicked sound design for such an old film.
I don't think the new film will be that great, but I'm sure it'll be enjoyable just to see the Spielbergian special effects and overall grand scope. Plus seeing the world go through an apocalypse on film never seems to get old. Anyone remember the 90's War of the Worlds tv series? The aliens apparently didn't die and simply went into hibernation for 50 years until they could develop a natural immunity to human diseases. Interesting concept but not a great tv show. |
