They're not all that different at all and tend to share similar topics. It's how they choose to express those topics I find the clash. /end of back peddle |

I've only read Fight Club, Girlfriend in a Coma and Hey Nostradamus so I might not be quite up to speed enuff to really put in my opinion (plus fight club was a long time ago and I can't remember much of it).
But to me they are similar authors.. both very hip, fingers on the pulse of modern society, dark undertones, confused complex characters.. and a penchant for merging the mundane with the surreal/supernatural. Hey, what do you know, I'm enough of a smartass to comment after all. |

I'm not arguing with any of those points.
Their presentation are completely different though. You have one describing the unity, disfunctionality and quirks of main or side characters stressed through out a book with happenings of real life events (family, breakups, relationships, affairs, travel). The other shows the stresses people exhibit when pushed to limits involving unreal or unlikely events contstrued together with enough 'logic' to make someone question, "What the fuck?!". I can see how a fan base could be divided between someone as 'everyday' Coupland while hating the works of a guy who talks about eating dismembered genitalia, though they both discuss similar subjects. |
