anyone know how to fix 54' tv's?

i have a 54' projection tv and its doesnt work. it makes noise when u turn it on but the picture does nothing:( they said it would cost me about 300$ to fix...if anyone knows how to fix this for cheaper that would be super cool. i guess i could just undo the tv and start looking at it but im afraid id make it worse.
