YEAH I STAY FAR AWAY FROM THAT SHIT

I THINK THE STARTUP COST IS MORE EXPENSIVE, BUT EVENTUALLY YOU GET EVEN.
I THINK FOR ME A LOT OF THE COST IS TIME, EITHER YOU HAVE TO GO HUNT AND BUY VINYL, OR YOU HAVE TO BUY/DOWNLOAD A BUNCH OF TRACKS ONLINE AND BURN THEM TO CDS, WHICH I FOUND TO BE A HEADACHE BECAUSE CATALOGING/KEEPING TRACK OF WHAT IS BURNT WHERE IS JUST A FUCKING NIGHTMARE NOW I HAVE AN EXTERNAL DRIVE AND A LAPTOP, FITS IN A BACKPACK, ALWAYS ORGANIZED, WORKS ON MY FRIENDS SYSTEMS AS WELL AS MINE. I CAN GRAB TUNES ON MY LUNCHBREAK OR WHENEVER. |

^yeah, no doubt it'll even out in a hurry if you get into it... especially if you already have a large CD or MP3 collection
i love digging for vinyl & it's sad to me if that whole experience gets lost because of digital files... but as you said, just because it makes things cheaper & easier doesn't mean it'll make a shit DJ into a good one. i'm definitely looking at purchasing serato in the next year, i'm really intrigued by it and how it would change my DJing approach. but i still have some issues, mainly regarding the liability of bringing my laptop into a nightclub. i'm also still not 100% convinced that sound quality isn't an issue, i've heard sets of all 320kbps on a good system and thought it sounded fine - but when you hear it used back-to-back with vinyl the difference is more apparent. |

yea, that's another thing - digging is fast becoming a lost art.
I still buy 80% of my tunes on vinyl - I just rip it onto my computer when I bring it home. I *love* digging. I love hunting through dusty crates looking for that one score. Kids these days have no concept of how difficult it used to be to find some of this shit on vinyl :). |

You think that there are alot of kids who wont play because they think people dont think their music or something? |

DIGGING IS A GREAT HOBBY GUYS AND I SEE WHY IT MAY BE FUN BUT IT HAS NO APPEAL TO ME, I DONT NEED TO GO ALL TREASURE HUNTER ON A TRACK TO APPRECIATE IT
PLAYING OUT AN EXCLUSIVE/HARD TO FIND TRACK THAT COST YOU $80 DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO ME, WOULDN'T PUTTING MORE MUSIC INTO THE HANDS OF MORE PEOPLE MAKE EVERYONE BETTER? LIKE ISNT EVERYONE TIRED OF GOING TO THE CLUB NIGHT AND HEARING THE SAME SHIT OVER AND OVER AGAIN BECAUSE EVERY DJ IS LIMITED TO THE RECORDS THEY CAN PICK UP ON A SATURDAY RATHER THAN A TUESDAY/THURSDAY |

i don't dig necessarily to find rare pieces, and i've never paid close to $80 for a tune... i just enjoy the randomness of it, finding some crazy old shit you may have completely forgotten about otherwise. plus it's an educational experience, i've absorbed a lot of valuable info from record sleeves, record shop staff & other diggers. not saying everybody has to do that to be a DJ but it's a shame if that whole culture dies out because there's not enough of us left to support it. i don't think that's the case though...

in the immortal words of DJ Shadow:
"Digging won't make a bad DJ good, but it will make a good DJ better." Some of my best finds were tracks in a thirft store where the only thing i knew when I bought it was that the name of the song or the artist sounded kinda cool. |

I personally dont use any pre-made blends although i understand where guys are comin from using them in shitty setups w/ shady equipment.
I have a similar situation playin thurs nites @ the Standard ... arguably the worst DJ booth for vinyl djs in the city. Cant do much there but be basic ..not so bad tho as most of that crowds there for hits anyway. Serato does help out huge w/ blends .. obviously using relative mode its all about a matter of speed & having cue points set. With sum practice & knowledge of ur instrumentals & acapellas u can blend 4-5 instrumentals w/ a single acapella live ! (while makin it sound good) Im still on version 1.4 - One guy calls me caveman cuz i refuse to upgrade.lol. im just very comfortable w/ the stability & the fact its NEVER given me a major problem since i started using serato a year ago. That being said , I dont have the looping feature I keep hearing about .. however having my cue points set combined w/ keyboard shortcuts does the job just fine. I find that essential doin live blends when u dont have the instrumental to a certain track . (works like a gem for live mashups) The dj friendly intro's are very useful there too .. I like how you can just physically loop the intro part to a track for 2 mins doin a blend .. .then un-loop it when its time to switch ..the intro track starts as u finish ur blend... ur mixing live and it sounds like a studio edited mixtape. |

^ you should instal 1.7.1 just to check it out. The looping is pretty cool (although I still only use it at home and not when I play out).
you can have both that and an older version running at the same time on your computer. Details here: http://www.scratchlive.net/forum/dis...ssion_id=29618 |
