By "true" hip hop, are you referring to "independent" hip hop, or "backpack" hip hop...? I've yet to understand why it's even referred as that. Hip hop is hip hop. Pure and simple.
And then we have good hip hop. But what is that...? Forward thinking hip hop? By this, I'd asume most would think of J5, Heiroglyphics, and even Gang Starr but what about Timberland and Neptunes? Their work tends to be forward thinking in terms of musicallity rather than lyrical. If you avoid one type because it's lacking lyrical prowess, you may be missing out on some dynamic music production. |

4mula he has been aorund for years but really what has he put out that has actually caught your ear besides freestyles. His summer album was disgustingly horrible.
I totaly agree with Rawb by the way. It all comes down to an opinion and your opinion of true hip hop isnt about talking bout booty and bling. Theres many rappers out there who dont have poetic soulfull sappy heartfelt rhymes and still are considered "true hip hop" well to me atleast and many others i would imagine. heres emcee serch from 3rd bass who really is a great hip hop emcee and is considered to be one of the best from back in the day. "Tight fit, dim lit spot, is where I'm movin to Sweaty but these slow tracks start soothin you Light-skinned, steps into the picture Program is fixed, the mix will let you get your hand around waist, space drippin from moisture Strokin the neck, you suspect that she'll voice her approval, whippin and flippin your pelvis Brothers step in, step off, you get selfish Yours for the take-home, so she can take up space at your place, but then you start to wake up Groove goes to fade, introductions are made Love my name is Serch, now step for some shade in the dancehall" he aint talking about the death of his mother or how he can't afford groceries but..... is that still hip hop? I hope so! Heres some jay z "Then hop ya ass out that S-class Lay back in that maebach, roll the best grass, I ask... Have you in your long-legged life ever seen a watch surrounded by this much pink ice? Look but don't touch, muthafucker think twice Cause the gat that I clutch got a little red light Need a light?" I don' think you should blame his rhymes b/c his flow is definatley on top. But possibly blame the life he lives. Jay z does'nt have to much to complain about. he can fuck whoevr he wants, buy wutevr he wants, he can do anything almost. So obviously hes gonna rhyme about that mostly. most of these independent artists are rhyming about whats going on in their life also so who gives a shit conclusion. Both jay z and (insert independent "I'm different then everyone else ", "You make money your a selout" rapper here) are hip hop. two different styles though. Hip hop is about acceptence also and don't hate on something just b/c its not talking about what you wanna hear. |

yo i met deceo tha' other day....hes been doing hip-hop for a long ass tyme ,he's 30,and has been producing ,graffing and keeping the scene as close to real as it can be in this day and age.
he gave me a c.d he produced-moka only-flow torch and usually i'd be like moka only.....errrr?....no thanx but this is his 1st c.d and it was only realesed on vinyl...an ive been bumpin' trak 5 off the heezie...the beats are hipnotyzing the lyrics are aiight but the beats deceo made.....SHITT there ill!!!! i was soo inlightend when i met him ,i had only herd of him from other heads and hes sooo highly respected...he is the guy who invented the station mashed (late night undergriound hip-hop radio)(brodcasted across from pigeon park in the building with the take 5 pieces on it) but funding was soo down so now the station is dead. i smoked a blunt with this guy and went to his place we talked about hip-hop(elements) and i learnt sooo much 'bout van city hip-hop history...in like an hour it was deffanatly an appiffany(sp?) yea' thats all it was jus' dope to meet onna the guys who started the scene in van. an' he seriously dug my shitt so thats even doper. |

huh.. well I was a pretty big hip hop buff back in tha day but it has now been a while. Christof I m feeling what you said bout the purity of the lyrecists vibe they throw throughout the rhyme. Hip hop is all in the story they tell as an mc.
Umm.. now for my faves I 'd have to say mostly westcoast artist like the classics : 2 Pac,Westside connection, and all the rest of the hardcore gangster rap. But, I m always loving the vibes of Gangstarr & NAS Escobar and Dr. Dre and Snoop back in tha day with the 1 st Chronic album NAS is my ultimate tho fo sho ! Basically, this is the exact same conversation that's been had about every other kind of music there is many times over... except maybe for children's music, I don't think too many people thought that Raffy let the money go to his head after Baby Beluga - although I do remember the couple underground albums before he made it big, that shit was sick (whats really sad is that I think i actually still have those somewhere) - yet I digress. There aren't many things in this world more opinion oriented than music - it's probably the one thing (other than eating, sometimes sleeping and that stuff that other people besides me have) that everyone in the world partake in on a regular basis, that gives you 6 x 10E9 different perspectives which makes any idea of claiming something to be "real" or something else pretty inane. I know whats real to me and much like everyone else I have a nice long winded opinion about it (blah, blah, blah...) but to make your day a little brighter i'm gonna spare you mine - or so i would have you believe.
As for the scene in Van, it's there but you do have to look pretty hard to find it sometimes compared to other musical events going on. Urban music tends to develop in metropolitan areas which Vancouver is not, so you can't really expect to see here what you might in TO or in any major US city. Maybe after we cram another few million in the lower mainland. Why all this Jay-Z talk though, there's no way he could've sold out because he was lame to begin with, that of course is in my ever so modest opinion (lame). Nobody's mentioned Jungle Bros or Souls of Mischief yet though, and if anybody's into the jazzier side of life make sure you check out the Pocket Dwellers, some good canadian shit. Ash3, I agree with you with the rest of the shit, but Nelly! "It's getting hot in here, better take off all my/your clothes" Give me Raffy any day, he doesn't need a band aid to be cool. Call to arms: I'm puttin this one on the block cause I'm slowly runnin out of time and it's kinda fun this way. We have a slot open still for the event at the bottom of my post, I'm lookin to fill it with some turntablism (which is very much a part of hip hop btw) and believe it or not they're somewhat difficult to find in this city (see above). If anyone reading this has gots or knows someone that's gots tha skillz and is interested please drop me a line at [email protected]. **Note: I don't mean to be an asshole or anything but when I say skillz i mean it** As well, if anyone is interested in doing some ghetto painting (or graffiti as some people call it - and apparently graffin seems to be catchin on) for the event, feel free to drop me a in line at the same address. |
