^oh stop your whining
Why's everything gotta be a RAVE. I think it looked like a really cool event. 4 stages with a huge line up and a beer garden under the sun I think it's really unfortunate that it failed. it shows that Vancouver is still really immature when it comes to cool events. Those types of events happen in most major cities all over the world. Why not here? We have enough raves in Vancouver. I think other types events would be cool to. But I guess we gotta go to Toronto for something like that eh |

Well Carrie it was organised to the best of what they could do. But unfortunatly ticket sales weren't there so it prevented a lot of things from happening
Right away they got scammed by a fake booking agent that took them for a ton of money for Jamariqua (sp?) Also the unions started getting picky so their budget got even more expensive. Add that with low ticket sales, and some other party thrown just to screw up Summerlove I'm surprised that it actually went the way it did. I kind of wish Vancouver had the diversity to have all kinds of events. Day parties, 3 day outdoor parties, live hip hop or even Rock stages at raves etc etc makes things more interesting and less repetitive |

but dave, we do have, and have had all day outdoor festivals like this....under the volcano, arts county fair, etc...plus touring ones like ozzfest, area one etc....lots of things like that have worked perfectly fine in vancouver....
but why summer love? why take something that was an underground, all-night party and try and turn it into a all day corporate boozefest (hello mr. coors!)? they didn't fail because vancouver is immature or any bullshit like that, they failed because the core people who went to summer love over the years were turned off of what they were doing, and they were unable to attract any new crowd with what they were offering. and what the fuck was up with getting ron jeremy to "host" it? it's not the fucking simple life... |

i agree with dave on everything he said. i think when he said diversity, he meant musical diversity, cause, well, this city has none. its all about hip hop and rock, in other words top 40. the way i see it, its all about promotion, and some people may even be tired of hearing me say this, but if you don't promote a party right, no kind of party will happen the way it was planned. we are also unfortunate enough to have quite the conservative authorities in this city who have a zero tolerance for anything that involves the word 'party'. why do you think arts county fair is called a fair and not a party? i would like to see a day-time event. i think there were great ideas behind summer love at tbird stadium, but they just didnt fly cause people were so used to it being an illegal rave. things dont have to be illegal to be fun. look at all-night events. they are not so illegal anymore, yet they draw large crowds. now if those same organizers actually stoped competing with each other like 10-year old kids, got together and threw a nice big true massive, people would go, the organizers would make money, and everyone would be happy. since the summerlove failure, solid and twisted have built a nice fan base, it wouldnt be too hard to take the crowd out to a nice event outdoors, we get beautiful summers here, take advantage of them ffs [/end rant] |

Well lets look into the recent history of Summerlove. A few years a go Rich Gablehouse bought it. He saw the potential of Summerlove and envisioned that it could be one of Canada's most infamous parties. He did a pretty good job of that in year 2000 when 12 000+ people showed. Now I'm not saying it's cool to turn what used to be a cool lil underground event under the stars to a huge corperate event. I mean all the rumours you people heard about Mr. Gablehouse probably have a slight truth to it haha. However he did succeed in making Summerlove into Vancouvers biggest mainstream massive. Picture it...12am Hiway number 1 traffic is backed up for MILES, going at a snails pace. People getting out of there cars peeing, drinking, partying......it was pretty wild. What I really respect about Gablehouse is that he envisioned something and then he made it happen. Can anyone name any other rave promoters that would rent out Mt Seymour all night for Winterlove music and snowboarding? SL2000 was by that lake. Awsome venue. The city was not liking the disruption of these raves so the next year they threatoned to put up roadblocks so that people could not enter. So they used Popkum Rd. They were expecting another HUGE 12 000+ person turnout, so the average way popkum is used couldn't be used for this type of event. They paid big bucks to use a part of popkum that was used for cornfields. I think they actually had to buy all the corn, condition the land etc etc. They also had to pay a very large sum of money to the neighbors to use their roadspace to accomidate all the traffic. To make a long story short, Summerlove at Popkum wasn't just a simple popkum party. The logistics and money it took to make it happen is bigger than most of the parties had in their entire budgets. After the party they knew they wouldn't be back the next year. The logistics were just too insane. They knew they had to find a bigger and better venue They had a year to think about it. I heard rumours that they may have found a spot by Merrit. But how many would actually travel that far. Remember this party is now for the mainstream "ravers" So I guess they one day had a great idea. Maybe one of Gablehouses visions, to follow in other cities footsteps and throw a massive daytime event with huge headliners......and a beer garden! If it aint broke don't fix it is a good moto, but one must remember they didn't have any other realistic venue options. Plaza of Nations??? haha thats just wrong for Summerlove So they decided to take a risk and try something new! It failed miserably. (just like Winterlove did) But they still had the balls to try something new. Something that is lacking in the Vancouver massive rave scene.......Something new. Nowdays it seems that all raves are is dj's and lasers......it shouldn't be! Did they deserve to fail.....of course not I don't know Rich Gablehouse well enough to speak about him but I do know that Ivan and Rick, the 2 other promoters of the show poured their heart into it. They really wanted to bring Vancouver something new, different and exciting. I threw KISS with those two so I have hands on knowledge of how they think of their parties and the people who go to them. Rick and I have been throwing every single event togethor for years now. If you people remember the KISS parties at The Plaza of Nations you would remember all the extras that we put into that party that no other promoter could even be bothered to think about. Like the chill rooms and stuff. I'm saying all this cause it's further proof that Summerlove wasn't just a shady, greedy money making machine with evil promoters. Ivan & Rick are the best in the business Now the next year, after the failure. Swingkids and Twisted now own Summerlove and had plans to bring it back to an allnight party status. However with the unfortunate circumstances of Rhythm Nation being cancelled. They also backed out knowing fully that they wouldn't suffered HUGE finacial setbacks if it went on So maybe one day they will still bring it back. Ivan still owns his 50%. He started Summerlove Calgary. This year Bassline Ent will more than likely be taking it over. So you'll be hearing a lot more about SL Calgary from me in the future so yeah. Thats the story that I know. |

Also Area One failed miserably didn't it? Nobody gave it a chance even with Outkast and Oakenfold there. Among many other huge names It's unfortunate cause if that was an allnight party it would've got 1000's. But since it was during the day attendance was so low that they didn't come back the following year |
