You are assuming that Shawn, isn't or doesn't want to be a DJ. How does he not deserve a fair shot. He hasn't played out, and this will be his first time. So you tell me, why isn't he a fair submission? I agree, he has more net cred on here than most of you, but at the same time, I have had people say to me that by far, you are the best mix. So what are you complaining about? |

k well i don't know who Shawn is....but I guess what I'm saying is i'd like to see a DJ be given a shot...like was promised at the start of this contest. i dont see why these hairbandits have to occupy a timeslot on the stage when they can shotgun beers and "entertain" anywhere.
i guess it would be different if you introduced this contest as an entertainment timeslot or something....but its just annoying for the DJ's who made a mix and could actually get a start to their career to be ousted by some sideshow i don't see why you can't let nabs spin his set (cuz he seems to be the winner out of the DJs) and arrange something else for the hairbandits to do whatever it is they plan on doing |

I am going to remind you what Apex is about. It is about showcasing local musicians. No matter what music they play. It is a diverse collective effort, and because it doesn't fit what you feel is the mold, you think he shouldn't be allowed?!?!?! Every year, I get inquiries from all genre's of music who want to take part, including rock bands. As you said, you don't know Shawn. He could be trying to aspire to be a radio DJ, or work in nightclubs, or even be in a band. But because he has a gimmick, you assume he isn't musically talented. If you want, I will post my opinions of what I think of all of your mixes here! Pick them apart piece by piece and tell you why you shouldn't play on my stage. But that isn't what this is about.....so how about you keep your arrogant and condescending opinion to yourself and give everyone who has entered a shot. |

Yeah there seems to be a lot of contradicting statements surrounding this whole contest...but i guess there's no point in arguing about it
I wasn't discounting Shawn because he wasnt playing some kind of electronica....I never argued that this was an electronica contest....I only thought it was unfair because I didnt think he was actually planning on playing live music....i thought it was just some beer drinking sideshow, maybe with some rock music on a CD player or something....thats kind of what it looked like from what he proposed in his pictures...maybe if he mentioned what is that he would actualy be doing, or provided a demo like the rest of us it might have made some sense This was introduced as a DJ contest, and you can't deny that, you may have changed the some of the guidelines as it went along but it did start out as a timeslot to "give new and upcoming djs a shot to show off their stuff." If the hairbandits were introduced as DJs or a live musical group and submitted a demo like you said was required then a lot of confusion could have been prevented Last edited by dave mcnasty; Apr 05, 06 at 02:39 PM. |

And just because they might include some stuff to their act including a wicked air guitar and a beer chugging contest, I have to say, it will be far more entertaining than watching ANYONE bob their head to the music while changing records. Cause lets face it....that is all DJ's do. |

alright..someone has to explain this one to me...
how does someone provide a list of participants...with samples....WHICH ALL OF YOU CAN LISTEN TO...and this be a popularity contest. I think the only ones making this a popularity contest are the geniuses who cannot form an opinion for themselves. If you cannot click a link, listen to some tracks and form a LEGITIMATE opinion and vote... than don't even post, because in turn it's just uselesss spam bullshit that is taking away from what is being offered. Grow up. Both those abusing the voting system and those who don't want to give a local DJ a shot. Avana is trying to showcase talent and give someone a chance...who knows where you will go from the little chances you get. Good luck to whoever plays..I can't wait to hear it with everyone else. |

The thing is, a DJ at apex can't be any number of things but that, A DJ. DJ stands for DISC JOCKEY......if the hairbandits were planning on spinning some DISCS (like was assumed of entrants in the first thread for this contest) it might have made sense. But since you changed the rules half way through it's apparently turned into an entertainment contest. Which is fine. But it just wasnt what all the DJ's entered in when they recorded their demos. All I was saying is that it was originally a DJ contest and we were required to provide demos and the hairbandits seemed to have met neither of the requirements (until the rules somehow changed midway). But I'm not gonna bother arguing cuz I really don't care anymore |

This shit has gotten out of hand. Too much bitching for what was supposed to be nothing more than something to entertain people and get them hyped up for the rest of the party. If all of you are that adamant about and really feel that we shouldn't be there then just fucking pull us.
I can only stand so much whining and crying before I snap. So like I said, if us withdrawing is your baby-ass equivalent to getting a fucking soother stuck in your trap then so be it. IF NOT.... seriously, shut the fuck up and let the vote decide it. I'm honestly not trying to shit on anyone in particular here but it just seems that there's now way too much hype for an opening fucking slot at a party.... |

A DJ can be anything.....but then I am beginning to think you don't know the difference. Lets take Paul Oakenfold for instance, he is not only a DJ, but a producer. If he were to be part of this contest, and decided to do a live performance instead of bringing his records, it wouldn't make him less a dj. And for the record, I know the medium in which the hairbandits intend on playing and it is discs, once again, not making them any less of djs. Because they didn't submit a demo, doesn't mean they didn't follow the rules, they CHOSE not to submit a demo. The only requirement I had, was that the demos not be longer than 25 minutes. Had you entered yourself without a demo, I would have let you in. As far as I am concerned though, if someone is playing music on the stage, and the crowd is dancing and enjoying it, then that is a dj. If you feel the need to add further to this, or argue more with me, please, send me a pm, otherwise, try and focus on getting yourself some votes. For the record, people tend not to vote for those that create drama and your mix had been a favorite out of all the mixes from what was reported back to me. |

"Grow up. Both those abusing the voting system and those who don't want to give a local DJ a shot."
i don't see where the abuse has occured, check ip's of who votes or something from time to time (though that is a bit of a hastle i'm pretty sure it can be done). someone mentioned before "who the fuck is edoe", exactly that..i'm still fairly new to this forum and most of my friends don't post on this site so they specifically made accounts to vote because they like my mix and want to come see me spin (even though chances of that are lookin slim rightnow :) ). on the issue of the hairbandits..i honestly don't know, maybe a good idea to get people rowdy before someone jumps on the decks? haha..though i think the whole musical aspect of their scheme lacks it should be interesting. |
