Calling Computer Geeks
I am having a bit of an issue....
My computer is really lagging and I have no idea why. I went into the little remove programs thingy and removed crap that was there for no reason (spam programs i guess or whatever) and it still is slow :( I dont know what else to do. I need somone to come look at it and tell me why the thing is crap! It worked fine when i was on some sort of "network" when i was at home but now that im on my own and on wireless the thing is shit! Its not only the internet that lags but its general programs. What do i do :( I just need to know if its fixable or if i need to buy a new one |

the only technological thing i know how to run is my cell phone and my straighting iron. I need somone to come FIX this for me.... will pay with dinner and drink :) |

i've found that defrag barely does anything, unless you're adding and deleting files all the time. i'd suggest downloading adaware, spyboy search and destroy and any other big spyware apps. run them all and remove any spyware they find for starters.

Agreed but she did say that she deleted a bunch of crap that was there for no reason so a defrag should help. Maybe even delete some more stuff such as old mix sets you hardly listen to, if your anything like me you have ALOT of them and they do take up quite a bit of room.

deleting files wont really help provided you have space on your harddrive
you could have unnecessary background processes running, download this tool http://tinyurl.com/7qbac and run it, anything you see that you don’t think you need or use take the checkmark off. then restart your puter. if that doesnt help you could have some malware.. dowload and run this tool http://tinyurl.com/yslp and have someone who knows what they are doing take a look at the log... you said its only slow when you are on the wireless connection? |

Uhhhhmmm....
it's really hard to see what the problem is when you are not there! 1. defragment (guess it won't help, but worth a try) 2. the xp connection limit can slow down your system (doesn't have to, but it's possible, for instance if you do lots of filesharing) http://xp-antispy.org/component/opti...ory/Itemid,26/ special --> connection limit --> yes, i got it --> patch to 50 connections! (you might enable some other options, too, like fast shutdown) 3. scan for spyware with the following tools: http://www.lavasoft.de/ (ad-ware) http://spybot.safer-networking.de/ (spybot) http://www.ewido.net/de/ (ewido) http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx (i know it's silly if ms offers an anti-spy app but tests say it's good) scanning with only one app is NOT enough!! 4. press ctrl + alt + del and check your processes is there one that constantly uses a big amount of cpu? if yes, which one? 5. firewall !! do you have one? it's essential on windows... http://www.kerio.com/ http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/ i do NOT recommend the built-in xp firewall, it's crap. 6. you know what the main reason for spyware is? internet explorer! switch to another browser: http://www.opera.com/ http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ 7. check for rootkits: http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilitie...tRevealer.html http://research.microsoft.com/rootkit/ (very unlikely, but who knows) 8. clean your autostart! how many apps are in there? remove the ones you don't need. 9. scan for viruses: http://www.free-av.com/ http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 the free ones, not the best, but they should be good enough for this task. 10. and most important: use your brain when surfing the web! ;) Last edited by anewlife; Aug 08, 06 at 01:14 PM. |
