NBSS Panicks Over 30 People After TB Diagnosed in Student
Thirty people at B.C. school feared infected after student diagnosed with TB
NBSS is worried over 30 out of 250 people testing positive for TB after a student was diagnosed with it while travelling abroad. IMHO I would not be too worried about TB unless I was on one kind of antibiotics for a long time, which may leave you at risk to develop TB due to drug resistence. Of the 30 people testing positive, possibly 3 of them may develop TB if not treated. TB also can lay dormant until one develops an IV drug habit and gets HIV. This may put another person at risk if s/he is in an at-risk category i.e. history of child abuse/neglect and/or domestic abuse. Of the four potential TB cases recently detected, 3 of them will get the lung form of the disease while the fourth may develop TB in other parts of the body even if the lung form is cured, especially after undergoing antibiotic therapy for it. While the lung form is contagious, other forms of TB are not. Because the Fraser Health Authority spokeperson isn't panicking, I would not be worried about TB unless I was in the at-risk group i.e. old, smoker, travels a lot to countries with the disease prevalent, drug user, or on immunosuppressants for cancer. I don't think I'd be worried if 30 out of 250 people tested positive for TB when only 4 of them would be at risk to develop it with one person possibly at risk to get a drug resistant form of it i.e the lung form is eradicated but the patient goes on to develop TB in another part of the body either due to antibiotic monotherapy or as a result of another disease (cancer or HIV).
The actual risk is like 0.4 percent chance of the antibiotic series not working, and you aren't going to die tomorrow of it. Reporting it in the news was done only to create rumors, create a false panic and worry the worryworts. This could have a cry wolf reaction where with repeated reports of AIDS, Avian flu (only infectious to people in contact with infected birds), West Nile virus (only affects young and old people as well as immunesuppressed people) and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy ("Mad Cow" disease) will lead us to underplay a real epidemic. Swine flu is worse, and polio is rising again, especially in areas where polio vaccines are still given. And the best preventatives are garlic and washing hands. For TB, just effen cover your mouth when you sneeze. What we really need to do is make wearing protective nose and mouth coverings trendy. |
