College or not
Kay... so heres the deal..,..
*****plz read in its entirity... i really need help with this***** My grandmother started a savings account for me when i was a baby and has been putting money in all my life. for every bit of cash she puts in the gov't doubles. I have 12,000 dollars as it stands. I also have 8,654.33 in my personal account. If i am not registered in a post secondary institution by the age of 19 i don't get the gov'ts half of the money. :soak: So my rents are pushing me into college. Im set to register for January semester at Douglas, in new west. For what courses i have NO idea. I was going to take hotel restaraunt manegment... but i dont think its for me. I don't know whats for me and i don't want to take general studies and waste my time and money. i was thinking of getting a two year marketing degree or something. What i really want to do is be a singer!!!!!!!!!! for those of you that have heard me sing... would that be a wise choice? honestly? I don't know what to do! Should i move out, get a full time job and work my ass off at singing etc and try to record a demo etc.... or should i go to college and be a restaruant manager :soak: :soak: :soak: I'm confused. For those of you that spin and have preformed at parties around van regularaly.... how did you build up your rep? what kind of work did it take? Any insight would be very appreciated! |

don't not go to school to become a singer.
go to school...get a degree in something that totally interests you...music production or music busines admin (that way you have some background into the business and such).... then still work your ass off to try and be a singer... cause if it doesnt work out...your screwed right?! do u wanna work min. waged jobs the rest of your life because you didnt end up going to school? probably not. so at least you would have something to fall back on. |

go to school take up some courses that just sorta interest you
and while you're @ school use the equipment and people there to help get a demo recorded you can do both or take up broadcasting the choice seems easy but its yours to make Last edited by slim_shaady; Aug 23, 03 at 07:24 PM. |

I just graduated from Douglas a few months ago. I got An Associate of Arts degree. I've kinda half-assed been looking for a job but not very hard. If it were a matter of choosing between someone handing you a record contract or paying to go to school, I would say take the record contract. But since I doubt Sony Records is pounding on your door as we speak, I would suggest taking the practicaly free college degree and in the mean time perfect your singing abilities. Take any courses that interest you and just make sure they are University transferable and after a semester or two, go see an academic adviser. Usually it takes a few semesters to find out what you really want to pursue, so test out the college environment and if you decide that college isn't right for you, then Mugs'n'Jugs is a block away, there's an easy career.

you could always take a program such as interpersonal communications or personal dynamics ... they're courses that start you off thinking about where you want to go with your life and how to deal with conflicts and that kinda stuff. i found them really helpful starting me into college.
