i was on alesse, triphasel and tricyclen, they all triggered something different, at this point i still dont know what the perfect pill would be like. the patch definately looks interesting, i bet all the youth clinics are running low on them.

I've been on way too many. Ugh. Alesse was the worse for me. It gave me major migraines. I had 8 migraines in 10 days. Also meaning I was puking almost every day. Absolutely horrible.

The other pills just caused other bad things for, such as loss of sex drive [which still hasn't returned], major moodyness, migraines, nausea.. The only good thing with each pill was the benefits to my period [way lighter, less cramps/back aches, etc]

WEEK TWO

Okay - so week one went well

about picking at your patch...it's not so easy to peel off, plus you'll likely have it in an area you don't normally have easy access to -- i mean what will your co workers think when they see you with your hands down your pants ;)

I showered, i bathed, i sweat at the gym and the patch stayed on

I got it off with some rubbing alchohol and it still ripped off all the tiny hairs

i had some uber minor irritation -- nothing worth talking about

this week my new patch is bum bound

Oh i don't know if it was my hormone levels adjusting or what - but i had a crying moment during Trading Spaces.......

i don;t see the point in the pill or the patch or the shot if they REDUCE your sex drive.

isn;t that sort of the point of birth control? so you can have sex whenever you want without worrying about getting pregnant?

if you don;t feel like having sex when you're on birth control, it seems hella pointless to me.

why bother fucking up your body and your hormones simply so you can have a reduced sex drive and other horrible side effects? doesn;t make sex sound like much fun.

yeesh... i'll stick to condoms, thanks.

Certainlly not all birth control is like that - nor is it the same reaction with everyone

it's all about finding the right one for you

condoms are are good form of birth control, but it's some of the other side effects of the shot, the pill and the patch that are beneficial
For me, the predictablity of my period and the lack of cramps is totally worthwhile

prior to the pill and now the patch I had cramps so bad i'd puke
and being sidelined like that is not cool!

Yoko.. shot experiences, well I've never tried it but my friend and her sister did. Its funny how different the reactions were considering they are in the same atomic family but, one of them is completely fine with it (of course theres an adjustment period but she had like nothing different really, maybe a couple moderate mood swings, spotting). On the other hand, her sister went mental until the shit got out of her body. Yes mental, not the most compasionate way to put it but thats what happened. Which is why i doubnt I'll ever be trying anything BUT the pill.

I figured it was because she had been depressed at a point in her life, but so had my friend. Who knows what set it off in her sister, and I personally don't want to find out myself. I'll just have to learn to take my pill EVERY day.

holy shit... that sounds like fun.

Luckily the first pill my doctor put me on was perfect for me. I was too lazy to go get my prescription once, so I tried a month of these other pills I had gotten a hold of (can't remember what they are called right now) but all they did was basically ELLIMINATE my sex drive. Fuck that shit.

I mean with MY hormones, maybe if it just toned me down a bit that wouldn't be too bad haha. Then again I have a man that can handle my raging hormones very VERY well, and I have control when it comes to anyone else, so why bother??

If my experiences weren't that bad, maybe i shouldn't be so scsred of trying the shot or patch? But then again, just because I didn't have horrible experiences with some doesn't mean I wont with others. Or are they usually composed of similiar er... things? (sorry I aint no science major!)

nah, I've had brands that have reduced my sex drive, (alesse) but I switched a few times till I found the right one. (ovral) In some cases, some brands have made me hornier than usual, especially during the 3rd week (it was a tri-phasic type).. but it also made me kinda psycho :P

Jenna... yeah... it seems like most peoples' experiences are varied... I think the conclusion for me is that I'm not going to bother with something I don't have control over for a period of 3 months... Once it's in, i won't be able to get it out. Spotting is a BITCH and I've already been through the "going crazy" thing, and it is NO fun.. i don't think my bf would like to experience me go crazy just yet.. :P

Its so crazy that all these methods of B C effect everyone so differently...personally I've been on tricyclen for a few years & its been nothin but wonderful.. I've had absolutely no worries, weight loss, & a super clear complexion, like my skin is sooo smooth because of it! *ahem* not to mention an increased drive for the nitty gritty, teehee. I think that the patch would get annoying bein stuck there & I'd rather just take a pill everyday. err, thats just me tho. Birth control is interesting stuff! :p

I've been on ellese for about 5 years now and lately Ive been finding it a pain to take on time. I even forget with my current sleeping scedual. I don't take pills well if i'm not eating a meal, and I'm constantly forgeting it because I eat out a lot at different times. I think I would like to switch to the patch some time soon but I am a little nervous to change over to quickly. I'm glad you have made this post Mariah. I find i'm not overly affected by medication as far as side effects. But it's new and it is nice to hear from someone that is using it. I always wonder how they do the testing for things like this though. lol I picture a bunch of women in a testing area. Ok now put this sticker on and go have sex. Come back in a month or so and tell us if you are pregnant or not. But anyway I assume that a doctor would not be just handing over this stuff if he had doubts about the product.
Definatly something I have been thinking about because the shot does not appeal to me in any way.

I was thinking that at first, and with having no luck with pills i went off it for about 4 months. then my periods went back to the way they normally were. i couldn't take it.

so i went back on as a way to deal with my periods. i can control when i get my period, i can skip my period, it's never unexpected and my cramps/backaches aren't so bad that i just sit there and cry cause it hurts to move.

there's more benefits then just protection against pregnancy. it's all depends which ones are more important to you.

Well it's different for everyone. Like I said before, I've had no bad side effects. It's made my skin way nicer, my periods super light and I don't get pms anymore. Now as far as sex drive gose, I'm always horny. If it's reduced my sex drive than I think that's for the best.

Hmm... I am on the shot and have been for almost 2 years. Never have I had a decrease sex drive. LOL it's quite funny, I'm usually the one begging for sex and get turned down because my boyfriend is "to tired".

I used Triquilar for 3 years, with a brief interlude for the shot (which was HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE. I was off b/c for a couple of months after my cycle of the shot ended, and I was one hurting unit. My cramps were horrid, my period was hella irregular, and I went back on the Triquilar just to sort myself out).

Now I've got an IUD (copper wire), which despite the fact that my cramps are slightly worse than the pill and my period is a bit heavier, it's a pretty good thing. I have no complaints, 7 months and counting (sex drive is all good. ;) ).

It cost $75, and it lasts for 30 months. Cheapest form of birth control there is (short of not getting any, and that just isn't an option for me. :D)

I've had it for 7 (almost 8) months now, and to be honest, the beginning wasn't all that pleasant. My first couple of periods were ALOT heavier than what I was used to, and the cramping was pretty bad too (but not as bad as when I got off Depo...Those few months I actually missed a couple days of work from cramping). Now it's great. I couldn't be happier...Like I said though, the bleeding is still heavier than on the pill and the cramping is worse than what I had on the pill (which was almost nothing), but all in all, I'm satisfied.

One of my best friends also has it because she's on hormone replacements for her thyroid. She's also using a copper-core IUD because every other type of (reliable, shall we say) female birth control is hormone based and screws with each other.

i had really bad experiences on alesse too. ugh....i bled for the whole month i was on it...i was irritable and emotional and i also had headaches. horrible.

as a side note...any of you girls have problems with doctors and birth control?

i was going to clinics for mine, because my family doctor is in abbotsford and i was living in burnaby.

when i went back to the guy who prescribed me alesse and told him i was miserable, he gave me this "youre an idiot" look and said "well my wifes on alesse and she hasnt had any problems". I practically had to beg him to give me something else.

another guy yelled at me literally for not going to my family doctor (i dont drive, i have no way of getting to him, i love him, i would go if i could!) "I DON'T KNOW WHO THE HELL YOU ARE, I CAN'T JUST GIVE YOU BIRTH CONTROL!!!"

it's mostly been awful for me. mean mean doctors who dont seem to give a fuck. seems wierd. wouldn't me getting contraception be better than unplanned pregnancy?

i like to think i'm a fairly intelligent articulate person as well, i was quite shocked to be treated that way by doctors.

^ i've always gone to a youth clinic for my birth control. i usually go to the one in new west. the women who work there are wonderful. by coincedence, i've seen the same lady everytime i've been there [i've been going for almost 2 years now] and she's great. i never went directly to my doctor because he's down in the west end in van, and i live in surrey. it's a little out of the way. the new west clinic is right near skytrain, so it's great. plus everything is confidential so my parents won't find out.

i can't believe some doctors would treat you in such a way about wanting to protect yourself. they of all people should know that not all medications work for one person the same way they work for another person. i think some also let their beliefs get in the way of your needs. time to find a good gynecologist..

i'm not sure if they're in canada or not, but there are other IUD's [the mirena] with a ever so slight amount of hormones. same protection, no where near the side effects that birth control gives you and without the heavy cramps that the coppers one can cause. once again, not sure if they have them in canada or not.

^I think they do...This was just the one that my gyn recommended...Meh...To me it doesn't make a difference which one I use. But seeing as it's there, I plan on leaving it there for another 18 months or so. ;)

Month 3!

OK
just so all you ladies know - the patch has been great
i think the biggest downfall is that it is so sticky

on Sunday when i go to change it, it's like ripping a band-aid off my bum
So i try to do that while i'm in the bath

My jeans are usually pretty low, so i have learned to be careful about not putting it where it'll constantly get rubbed by the waistline of my pants
It hasn't fallen off, but it has getten stuck to my panties a few times
I have been no more emotional or fat since starting it

I am as emotional and fat as i was on the pill :)
My extended health covers 80% of the cost, so i think the patch is the birth control for me!
