I would take option B. I went straight to college after I graduated and I hated it. I was so bitter.. I didnt feel like I had anytime to myself. Friends of mine who took a year off and traveled or just worked are much happier in college/university because of this.. It all depends on what you really want.. and how much motivation you have ;)

I think the whole year off thing is no good. I've been in school ever since I've graduated n i think its the best decision if ur serious about gettoing a career. U can always chill with ur friends on weekends and holidays and stuff. In the end u'd b better off going to school.

i originally was going to go to UBC for sciences after i graduated.
at the last second i realized that UBC wasn't the school for me and science really wasn't what i wanted to do so i decided to take a year off and figure out my real passion. i knew i would go back to school. everyone kept telling me to apply to art schools and i soon realized that art really was my heart and soul. so...i worked full time, built up a stronger portfolio and applied to Ryerson for photography, new media and film. got into all three and chose photography. taking a year off after graduating was probably the best thing i ever did. but that was only my personal experience; only you know what's best for yourself. -s. |

went to school right after graduating for three years + worked..eventually made a decision to just work because I got a real job and because I felt like where I was in life mentally, etc. wasn't allowing me to do as well as I had the potential to, and I didn't want to waste money and time doing a halfassed job.
Anyways, although I have an ok job now, I really miss school. I've got applications for tons of schools and thinking about saving up and going back. Close to getting my BA, then I want to work towards a masters after that. Where I go is kind of up in the air, I think Concordia is calling my name. |

I took a year off... then went back to school... then got kicked outta my program... then got a decent paying job and moved out... worked 3 years... got laid off... and now I'm trying to get back into school but I have to do a buncha pre reqs because by the time I apply it'll be over the 5 years that BCIT accepts high school transcripts (I gradded in 99). I have to try n scratch as much money together as I can but I'll still need to get a student loan in order to support myself. I'm pretty sure I wanna do this engineering course... it looks like a lotta fun.
Basically I fucked around a bunch and worked and now I'm paying for it. If I were you I'd stay home and go to school. You save a bunch of money and hardship doing it that way. I only got the good job I did because of the school I took and the fact that my employer was willing to take a chance with a 19 year old. What course are you taking anyways? Oh n one last thing... no school or course can guarantee you a job. |

You're like, 18. No decision you make now will be so major that it will lock in the course of the rest of your life. All that shit they tell you about how important the decisions you have to make RIGHT NOW are is basically a lie.
Take the time off. It will do you serious good. |

i took a year off after graduating, and that was fine...i worked
then i went to kwantlen...wasted a year there ... then went to bcit for one class ...meh then took another year or so off...went to trebas...found what i wanted to do for the rest of my life and the fucking school shut down and i lost money.. so that was almost two years ago i guess...and i still havent done dick all .... BUT i am going to scotland in the spring, and then returning to school in sept ...moving to kelowna...taking an even better course...and it helps that i dont have to pay for it.. my advice to you: if you want to take a year off...don't take it off just to chill with friends and party...DO SOMETHING with that year off....go traveling or something...DONT WASTE IT!!!!!!!! |

I've been going to school for 3 years nonstop since I graduated from high school (including summers).
the only regret I have is probably spending that I had $4000 saved up in the bank and spent it on a car. I would have preferred to go travelling now that I look back on it. other than that, I'm glad I have the experiences that I have. I don't think I would ever take a full year off unless I desperately needed to save up money or something. plus I can't really think of many jobs out there where I WOULDN'T be bored to death working full-time. looking back on it, I also can't see how taking a year off would have made me realize what I was passionate about. personally, I found one of my passions while I was going to school and taking general studies. I should also mention that I live at home and have parents who help me pay for tuition and books and whatnot. I realize not everyone is as fortunate as me and factors like this can really affect whether or not you choose to go to school right away or take some time off. --Joanne :P |

I took two years off after graduating from HS - one working, and one travelling. I came back, and am now entering into the fourth year of an honours program at UBC. I am both bored of school, and questioning its usefullness.
Listen to the people who say travel. |

traveling is a definite MUST! Kat , travel before u get tied down with working or school. I think when i come back from Japan I will go for my BA so I could become an English teacher in Japan at a University or highschool rather than teaching youngsters! ...but it all depends on how my experience goes while i'm there for the year.

I gradded in 99, and I've been out of school since.
I had no idea what I wanted to to do with my life until about 8 months ago, and in a way I'm kinda glad that I waited until now to consider going back to school. I think about all the people I know who were SO SURE about what they wanted to be. Then they go to school only to hate the classes they are taking, or take a program only to not be able to get a job. All that money "wasted"! I now KNOW what I want to do, and all it is is a matter of going to the school and talking to a councellor and then dealing with the pre-reqs. If you're not sure if going back is right for you, it probably isn't. Unless you know with complete certainty (and even that is only 50/50 at this point in your life), a year off to figure out what you REALLY want to do may be the better idea. This of course is all just my opinion... |

just apply for the program anyways...you have a whole year of grade 12 to decide if you want to actually go through with it or not. you can always drop out when the time comes to actually register if you feel like taking a year off.
i took a year off and worked, and now i'm goin on 2nd year of school. |

i was accepted into douglas was gonna take some science courses right outta highschool. i was the first girl on one side of the family to graduate highschool, and i excelled in sciences AND art. secretly i wanted to do art... BAD. this did not make my mom happy. then i thought about getting a trade, spending a ocuple years at bcit and getting a job then maybe going ot art school, but still, i wasnt in love with it. i decided i didnt want loans and my parents couldnt help me out so i took a year off. still inside i was all over art school, towards my parents not so much. anyways, during that year off discovered what i wanted, narrowed down where i wanted to go to school, applied got accepted and am loving every struggling moment of it. i love learning, so i knew that i would go back to school no matter what, thats why i felt comfertable taking a year off. and when im done this program im gonna take some more time off to save up, travel then get my BFA. it depends on what is right for you, but if you feel like you would be "stuck" i wouldnt do it. when it comes to education right after highschool you should be really passionate about it before you dive in, it is alot of money to waste, if it is your own. i have too many friends who have wasted years and money on an education they are not using. most have change their minds at least twice. but your 17, you dont need to know what your going to be or ever where your gonna be in 5 years, thats the glory of life, the surprise that tomorow will bring. really dont worry, highschool teachers and councilors make it seem like the end of the world if you dont go right into post-secondary, it really isnt. you hardly know yourself in highschool, how can you be expected to know what you will want to be in 5 years? but then again, maybe you do know what you want to be. personally, i dont ever want to know what i will be 5 years down the road - hopefully in brasil though. |

if you have a lazy personality, DO NOT TAKE A YEAR OFF
if you do take a year off make sure you make yourself as busy as possible. work full time, go travelling, read as much as you can.. just don't get lazy and sit around doing nothing. it will cost you difficult times ahead |
