should i do this surgery?
so i have a split collar bone that i messed up 4 years ago. i've been able to do heavy lifting work, play sports, work out etc etc with infrequent pain and discomfort since the injury but i have an annoying bump on my shoulder and the only time i experience pain from it is when i do some shoulder workouts or when i'm doing breathstrokes. i apparantly have the most serious possible break (AC- level 3) where all 3 ligaments in that area have torn.
my surgeon said that he is going to remove a tendon from my knee, wrap it around my collar bone which holds it down and provides the cells to rebuild the ligaments. i won't be able to use my shoulder for around 1-3 months. i'll have a hard time walking for a month, but in the end, the bump will be gone. i probably won't be able to do any aggressive sports on my shoulder for a year and i'm guessing that i'm gonna have one of those casts where my arms is sticking out for a while. probably won't be able to spin for the entire summer as well. the surgery is scheduled for next month... i'm having doubts whether i need this surgery or not.... i could leave it as a battle scar or i can get it fixed... but who knows what the results are gonna be.... |

you might as well get the surgery done sooner then later. If you never get it done then later down the road you may be even in more pain then where your kinda at now. And even if you get the surgery now you'll be able to recovery from it alot faster then if you get older.

I dunno, to me it sounds quite drastic. You would have the chance of complications with removing the tendon from your knee too. Have you questioned him on the accuaracy of this operation? Are most people near 100% after? I guess it really depends on the pain you are experiencing now.
I'm always quite leary of these types of operations now. I broke my arm nearly 4 times and the 3rd and 4th time I had to go to the OR to have it set as they thought they would need to plate it, but never did. Each time they set it wrong... causing me loss of rotional movement. My surgeon said he could fix it -- I had an operation to re-break it and plate it. I have less movement now than I did before the surgery and the surgeon doesn't seem to care. Now I have a 7" and 3" scars (luckily not so noticable despite the size) on my right arm, and set off metal detecters at the airport. |
