While in Australia...

.look for (swap) student work assistance program while in australia, it's a really awesome way to meet locals, work, and learn about local ecosystems
.get tickets that are exchangeable
.check out cheap tickets online or get tickets right before the flight (which may be cheaper)
.there are some world travel magazines out there, check out chapters...

you'll meet tons of canadians and like-minded people while away in australia i really don't think you need tons of advice just the wind at your back.

I did that program when I first traveled. I would only recomend it to young travelers (17-20) or those who want someone to hold their hand a bit when first traveling. Otherwise its kinda a waste of money.
