NAPT(Winners of breakthrough DJ of the year, Breakspoll 2006)
NAPT are Tomek Naden and Ashley Pope whose unique soulful breakbeat sound has been making waves the world over. So much so that breaks fans worldwide voted them Best Breakthrough DJ and nominated them Best Breakthrough Producer at Breakspoll 2006, The International Breaks Awards. Hailing from different backgrounds, Ashleys’ highly musical - both parents concert pianists and grandfather part of Jazz legend Ronnie Scott’s band, Tomek - DJing in the UK and abroad in his teens, they came together in 2001 through their love of electronic music. Growing up on a diet of jungle and house and with a shared passion for all kinds of styles, from abstract jazz to funk rock, they were ready to throw everything into one big music melting pot to create the fresh new sound that is NAPT. Their first release was a house remix for Sony of the club smash ‘Its Yours’ by Jon Cutler which reached Number 27 in the UK singles chart and was playlisted on Kiss FM and BBC Radio 1. They went on to do more house remixes before being inspired to step into the underground breaks scene and create what has since become their trademark sound. Excited by the fact that the tempo and nature of break beats can translate to people who aren’t necessarily into electronic dance music, NAPT went on to produce a string of club smashing breaks singles for established labels including Plastic Raygun and Rat Records to critical acclaim (Number 1’s in the MixMag Breaks Chart and Comcast Music Choice Electronica Chart). They have since gone on to remix some of the UK undergrounds most respected artists including MJ Cole and The Freestylers and major label artists such as Lumidee for Island Def Jam. In the words of Tomek “We want to create music that anyone can get into, music that has a soulful side, but at the same time has the dynamics and edge to get the dancefloor excited”. After becoming in demand DJ’s and playing shows all over the world (including the US, Spain, France, Poland, Germany etc) with their up-front party oriented DJ sets, they soon became involved with MJ Cole’s seminal ‘Prolific’ night, at London’s highly respected club Herbal, where they now host their own room ‘Contrast’. Drafting in the best new and established breakbeat talent out there ‘Contrast’ has received critical acclaim from the capital’s press and above all else, London’s party goers. |
