[6/3] PAUL EDGE & DJ UNKNOWN @ Element Fridays!

Element Fridays is proud to present the "UNLOCK THE DOORS TOUR" featuring...

DJ PAUL EDGE - Unlock the Doors | The Outer Limits | RAD23 | www.djpauledge.com | www.thedoors.com | United Kingdom

Paul Edge aka Twister is an enigma. The DJ and producer extraordinaire seems to epitomise the very essence of underground club culture. Despite having run one of the worlds most successful clubnights, The Outer Limits - a night that featured virtually every ground breaking dj and live act during its 11 year run, (including Luke Slater, Mr C, Terry Francis, Laurent Garnier, The Advent, Billy Nasty, Andrew Weatherall, Gayle San, Colin Dale, Union Jack, Billy Nasty, Colin Faver, Eddie Richards, Derryck May, Robert Armani, Frankie Bones, Scratch Perverts, The Herbalizer and many more) headlined around the world to audiences ranging between 250 to 30,000, and produced some of clublands finest dancefloor moments as Twister in the last 10 years - he has managed to retain credibility and anonymity and a passionate underground following that has driven his website, www.djpauledge.com to in excess of 150,000 hits a month from over 80 countries, with a live mix being downloaded over 500,000 times.

Perhaps highly respected Washington DC club night Sleaze summed up the Paul Edge enigma the best -

"Paul Edge made jaws dropduring his debut performance at Buzz, his techno electro fusion sound was still largely unknown. Pushing labels like Gigolo to an uneducated US crowd was indeed ground breaking, but this is what makes Paul Edge such a good Dj, from being one of the first DJs to play Trance in Canada in 1994, to introducing tech house to a packed Twilo crowd, Paul Edge consistently treads where others fear to go, perhaps his lack of worldwide "fame" stems from the fact that once other DJs catch on, he`s already moved on."

With The Outer Limits, Paul Edge developed an style rather than follow any particular genre, and whilst he can be considered as one of the people behind the music, what he plays now others will follow in 12 months, a characteristic that is reflected not only in his djing but also his production, it has also made it very difficult for the mainstream media to classify him. In 1998 he started promoting the term Tranz as an accurate description of what he plays. Tranz is not a musical genre, it is a style, fusing many musical influences into a dance floor friendly medium. In 2000 he put the Outer Limits aside following a highly successful 2 month Outer Limits tour of the USA with The Advent , ending in front of 5000 people in Nova Scotia, Canada, to concentrate on a new concept Remote Control.

Defying convention, Paul Edge took Remote Control to the USA, where the concept is now starting to take a hold on the US` clubbers imagination. As with The Outer Limits, Remote Control is pushing the envelope musically and helping to change people`s opinions of underground dance music.

The legendary Firestone in Orlando reported after a recent Remote Control event

"Paul Edge completely blew up the room. 506 people witnessed and felt a true dance music event in a city that everyone thought dance was dead in. It is not - there is a scene."

In April 2004 Paul Edge and The Outer Limits ended their 3 year association with One Love Management and are now preparing for the relaunch of The Outer Limits (Toronto) and Denial (Buffalo).

DJ UNKNOWN - XM Radio | RAD23 | Fischerspooner | www.dj-unknown.com | www.warnermusic.com | www.scenenetworks.com | NYC, NY

“Cylon Break Beat, Robo Titanic, Pop Lockisms, Eclectro, Scambient, Megaphonics, Alarmist 2 Step, Mc Synth, Neon Nu-Beat, Atari Thumb Cramp, Progressive Pogo Disco, Electro Rash, Porno Concertos, Laptop Limericks, Tri-Sexual Sambas, Non Wave Boombastics. New tools for a tired scenario.”

1998 was the year that drove Hillary Snyder (A.K.A. DJ Unknown) to wear a paper bag on his head. The New York club scene had fallen into a closed loop of Hip Hop, House, Techno and assorted Mtv approved “Alt” styles. The raw, break out energy that once made New York a night clubbers paradise had faded to black. Dancing, deemed a crime through archaic NYC Cabaret laws put a strangle hold on what was left of that energy. Striking a pose rather than stooping to a base activity like dancing was always a preferred stance to take for the snobbery and nervous new comers. In short, the famed NYC night scene had become nothing more than a modern myth.

In an effort to slap the scene into consciousness, a good sight gag was in order. That and a couple crates of records that reached for a mind set as opposed to a genre. The late 70’s and early 80’s in New York were nothing less than a cultural big bang. Punk Rock, Hip Hop, Ska, Disco, Reggae, Dance Hall, House, Techno, Hi NRG, No Wave, New Wave, etc…All energized by each other. Knowing the Pavlovian response he would get, Dj Unknown mixed 1 part 80’s NY underground with 2 parts Neo Electro. Around that time he was introduced to and became friends with Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner. After witnessing the legendary first performance of Fischerspooner at Starbucks on Astor Place, Hillary immediately offered to play as a side act. At that time there were no other DJs spinning electro-centric sets in NY. The partnership worked well. Fischerspooner’s show was put in an appropriate context with Dj Unknown’s set and a scene started to take shape. Playing with a paper bag on his head, Dj Unknown soon had a cult following. People were more than ready for some humor and individuality. Originally worn as a comment on the state of the club scene and a nose thumbing to the dj fame game, the paper bag’s ambiguous nature took on a life of its own. Apparently striking a nerve, four years later, Dj Unknown’s bag gag has been “adopted” by the Belgian DJ duo 2 Many DJs. Having borrowed it himself from the Gong Show hero The Unknown Comic, Dj Unknown enlisted in the small but potent, Anonymous Performer Army. A Private in a private army you might say. Joining Nash the Slash, The Residents, Artists Unknown, Bucket Head and Kiss to name a few.

Since the creation of Dj Unknown, Hillary has gone on to Dj / Promote major Neo Electro nights in NYC. Including NY’s first Neo Electro night called Nite Magic at Gavin Brown’s Passerby Bar which still runs. The Atari / Commodore fetish night called Blip pulled together the fractured 8 bit fanatic scene for the first time. Featuring music and digital visual art all based on or dramatically influenced by early video games. Dj Unknown’s set for the night might include original video game scores mixed with French House, Hip Hop, Electro old and new, Space Disco, Reggae, Techno, Dance Hall and anything else he could find that had incorporated the now famous SID chip sound as ear candy. The Profile Oscuro parties were a joint effort between Dj Unknown and the east coast record distributor team Safety In Numbers. Profile Oscuro’s mission was to bring in Electro heavies from around the world who had either been neglected or over shadowed by the Larry T “Electro Clash” media blitz. Among them were Hong Kong Counterfeit, It and My Computer, Ed DMX, Carl Finlow and Crossover. In addition to these events Dj Unknown has continued to work as a side show with Fischerspooner. In recent years his instincts and record collection turned him into a frequent flyer (see Recent Bookings Highlights List) and positioned him on club nights with the biggest names in the Neo Electro scene. In 2001 he was hired by Levi’s as Music Supervisor on a series of 3 commercials. In 2002 Cornerstone Promotions commissioned him to introduce America to the NY Electro movement on Cornerstone Player #35. Dj Unknown has also been featured in GQ, Shout, IN, Self Service, L.A. Weekly, Vice, Foul and Time Out NY.
