[6/11][21+] USC presents JOHN DIGWEED

united state of consciousness proudly presents an evening with...

JOHN DIGWEED - www.tca-web.com | United Kingdom

If you’re not an avid follower of dance music but are tuned into popular culture at all you’ve likely experienced music touched by the hands of John Digweed. Originally hailing from England but having clearly arrived on the global scene over a decade ago John has long since cemented his name in the pages of dance music history. His list of achievements is groundbreaking to say the least. Highlights of which would be the first proper dj mix compilation (“Renaissance”, done with Sasha), being the first British dj to hold a residency at what was then the world’s most well known club in NYC (Twilo, also with Sasha) as well as having remixed music by Danny Tenaglia, Underworld, Quincy Jones and New Order.
John Digweed is a DJ's DJ. The beauty of what he does lies in just how different he really is from his contemporaries. From his early beginnings in Hastings, England at the age of 15 in the blossoming scene of acid house to the apex of the international dj'ing world he has created and maintained a level of integrity that is the benchmark for both dj’s and producers globally. In fact, he has reached the very top of his profession, being voted #1 in a voter's poll by DJ magazine in 2001. John Digweed has become the people’s choice while maintaining his longstanding presence in underground dance culture. His popularity as both a dj and a person seems to have no limits, but his efforts transcend dj'ing alone, he is as much a producer and promoter. His moniker “Bedrock” is actually three things: a record label, a promotions company and a studio production partnership with Nick Muir.

His management and creative direction for the Bedrock record label has helped launch the careers of Danny Howells, Jimmy Van M, Chris Fortier, and Phil Thompson (Moonface). He has had the vision and creative insight to seek out mixes and remixes from artists as varied as Rui Da Silva, POB and The Freelance Icebreakers. To have a record released on Bedrock serves as the global stamp of production quality, ingenuity and integrity for underground producers worldwide. In fact, the name John Digweed is synonymous with those very qualities. From the nights he has either created or been a part of (Bedrock, Northern Exposure, Renaissance) to his world renowned mix cd's (Renaissance, Global Underground, Northern Exposure, Communicate, MMII and Bedrock) he has consistently produced characteristic products that stay in demand, himself included. Even with all of his global traveling he has still been able to hold down two monthly Bedrock residencies . As one half of Bedrock the production duo he has landed two tracks in the top 40 (“Heaven Scent” and “For What You Dream Of”) the latter of which made it into the hit movie “Trainspotting”. He has even tried a bit of acting himself ("Groove"). He and Nick Muir as Bedrock the production team also recently scored a Hollywood film (“Stark Raving Mad”) as well as the animated series of “Spider-Man” for MTV. He’s been kept busy by three recent tours (Delta Heavy and Area 2 (with David Bowie and Moby) in the U.S., and a twenty date Bedrock/Nokia University tour of the UK). A massive one-off event called the Big Beach Boutique in Brighton had him gladly performing alongside Fatboyslim to 250,000 of his fans and neighbors.

His Kiss100 radio show is quickly coming up on it’s forth year as one of the most successful dance music shows in all of England with internet broadcasts to the world. It has achieved a near cult status with listeners trading cd’s and mp3’s of the various broadcasts across the internet. John shares his platform weekly by bringing in a variety of worldwide guest dj’s.

As a person John's lack of pretense is complimented by imagination and invention. Good reason for John being one of the most respected, analyzed and imitated dj's in the world. His dj sets are both solid and durable with unyielding precision. His dj'ing and production sound has practically become its own genre. He generates an aura of self-explanatory excitement and enthusiasm. His sets are often filled with moodiness and musical mystery but held down with a punchy distinctiveness and earthly rhythm. Always emanating a sense of boundlessness he overlaps dream events that spill into reality with an enormous certainty.

with special guests...

CHLOE HARRIS - www.djchloe.com | London/Seattle

From the affinity of a Kraftwerk record sleeve, Chloe Harris has lived and breathed electronic sounds from the tender young age of five. Machine-like sounds coupled with autonomous looks inspired Chloe to repetitively listen to a sound that was just becoming prevalent throughout the world. While the world was listening to cheese-filled radio, Chloe was heading in other directions. Exploring music to a deeper degree during her junior high days meant her social collective was also evolving, and by the ninth grade, she found an enthusiast in Ryan, an older boy with a different perspective of music with one group that would be instrumental in the motivation for Chloe – Skinny Puppy. Fusing hardcore sounds with an emotional tip, it was some of the most amazing material Chloe had encountered. Unsurprisingly, it opened more avenues for her to explore and she found content with groups such as Mentallo and the Fixer and Wumpscut.

By high school, Chloe has completed her evolution. Desperately trying to source out different electronic genres, she became a frequent visitor of the outdoor and underground parties and would stay out until morning listening to amazing music - a theme most of us are akin to. The way the DJ intimately yet controllably reached the dancer made Chloe think it could be a career change for the best. However, without detailed musical knowledge at the time, let alone how it all functioned, she decided to just watch, listen and learn. By experiencing Autechre and FSOL as well as listening to ambient and old, seminal trance mixes, Chloe began to dissect and learn the sound, the textures and most importantly, the rhythms. While envisaging a career in djing, Chloe began work at Easy Street, a record store where she ordered in all forms of electronic music. With four years notched into her belt, she learnt how to sell the sounds to people who were there for other musical tastes. By the end, Chloe had become a patron for people who needed suggestions on where to head for the latest electro sounds and with groups like Underworld and the Crystal Method, it was an easy task. While keeping within this trend, Chloe also ensure that the more dubbed out sides such as experimental music were being directed to people she thought would feel it.

However, with the commercialisation of the culture, Chloe saw herself moving on to brighter pastures. Platinum Records was her next home, and it’s here she learnt the concepts behind labels and how they were all intertwined. It was during her time at Platinum that Chloe started getting gigs. The first experiences are always nervous times, but she came out of them with people dancing, screaming and having a hell lot of fun. Having started her own weekly radio show on Seattle based Internet radio station Groovetech in 1999, when a position to join it's online store arm came several months later, Chloe answered the call, continuing her work of assisting customers who were seeking new music and abstract sounds from the turn of the new millennium until it's closure, and during this time developed her show 'Further' which drew in listeners from all around the world.

In 2002, Chloe was invited to join the team behind the web site Progressive-Sounds, assisting in the development of the site, and later developing the 'Sound Bytes' concept, where people visiting the site to check out the latest in news, reviews and features could enjoy some of Chloe's innovative mixes whilst they browsed. Now into it's second year, each half hour edition is eagerly anticipated each week, with interest from music lovers being complimented by labels, some of whom have gone on to sign some of the unsigned tracks from around the world she plays. However, remaining true to her abstract roots, Chloe also took on a weekly residency at thriving young Internet radio platform Proton Radio, where her B-Sides show focuses on the more experimental electronic sounds that are often overlooked by many, and with growing support worldwide, overseas gigs around the corner, and a production career just starting, you can be sure that if you ever encounter Chloe, you’re in for a great time.

DJ CHRONUS - www.djchronus.com | Seattle

DJ Chronus has steadily risen to become a favorite in Seattle's growing dance music scene. Generally regarded as one of the area's top progressive DJs, he has been selected to headline the city's most prolific clubs, as well as open for the world's best DJs, including Deep Dish, Hernan Cattaneo, Darude, Marco V, Seb Fontaine, Satoshi Tomiie, Johan Gielen, Tall Paul, Chris Fortier, Markus Schulz, Lisa Lashes & Jerry Bonham among others. Chronus' fluidly-mixed cutting-edge sets incorporate house, breakbeat, trance, techno and tribal elements.

The dancefloor has been home to Chris since he was very young. Back then, hip hop & R&B greatly influenced his love for dance music. Growing up in a small town, he had little exposure to electronic music. He had heard bands like Chemical Brothers & Prodigy, but it wasn't until 1998 that he had his first exposure to house music in a club setting (The Palladium in Vancouver, BC). Since that night, he has been hooked.

Spending much time in the Seattle club scene and rave scene over the next couple years, Chris' passion for dance music and the dancefloor grew. With an ever-growing interest in the uplifting sounds of trance, he decided he wanted to be more involved with music.

In July of 2000, Chris and a long-time friend began teaching themselves how to mix records - specifically trance - and DJ Chronus was born. Many hours spent behind the turntables and in various record stores led to rapid progress.

The following May, a local hip-hop promoter booked a spirited DJ named Chronus for the second room at his weekly club night. The night went very well, and his first experience connecting with a crowd as a DJ left him uplifted and eager for more. Knowing that nothing would be handed to him and that the city was full of talented DJs, Chronus was driven to close his gap in experience with hard work and determination.

Promoting his own club night briefly at the Last Supper Club gave Chronus the opportunity to work with many talented local DJs - DJs that he had admired for years. From there, Chronus went on to hold a Tuesday night residency at Watertown where he gained invaluable experience behind the decks. During this time, his musical range expanded to include progressive house as well as breakbeats. To this day, the night, called Presence, is still the longest-running trance & progressive night in Seattle. A couple bookings in the side room at the Aristocrat's club gave him a taste of performing on a weekend - something he had not experienced since his first gig more than a year earlier.

In September of 2002, he got a break. An impromptu performance was negotiated afterhours at Contour. Chronus stepped in front of a packed house - the largest crowd for which he had ever performed. Dropping into some progressive and nu-skool breaks, he quickly electrified the dancefloor.

Regular gigs at Contour allowed Chronus to share the decks with many notable Seattle DJs as well as San Francisco's Taj and the UK's John Johnson. Steadily earning a reputation for smooth mixing, quality track selection, versatility, and overall dynamic performances, Chronus began performing at larger clubs such as Noiselab, and also making a return to the Last Supper Club (where he held residency).

At the end of 2003, Chronus was selected to open for Joshua Ryan at a packed Halloween show, as well as progressive genius Satoshi Tomiie, both at the Last Supper Club. Since then, Chronus has become a choice opener for some of the world's top DJs and producers, as well as a headliner for many club nights, even recently closing the night at Seattle's largest club (Premier) after Sandra Collins & Paul Oakenfold. His progressive sound has captured the attention of countless music fans & clubbers.

DJ Chronus is currently spinning at the top clubs in Seattle (including the Last Supper Club, Medusa, Trinity, Contour, Premier). Beginning with a recent invite from Holland's star producer & DJ Johan Gielen to share the stage at Club Circus' Spundae night in Hollywood, Chronus is extending his reach outside the Northwest. The future holds much promise.
