Hidden 2 *JUNE 16 & 17* Kelowna
HIDDEN 2 ~ June 16th and 17th 2006 Spacedub and friends welcomes you to spend a weekend under the sun and stars to experience a diverse mix of the finest talent B.C has to offer. This year’s two day event will be held at an undisclosed location in the Okanagan. There will be 2 stages, Djs, Bands, daytime activities, camping, concession and amenities. Featuring: Spence Purephunk // 20Hz // Vancouver Spence's skills on the Technics have gained him undeniable respect as one of Canada's top Breakbeat DJs. Now with emerging prowess as a producer and saxophonist, he is rapidly becoming a certifiable triple threat in the modern music scene. Andrew Spence was born on June 10, 1974 in New Westminster BC, Canada. He took piano lessons until the age of 13 then switched his focus to the saxophone. Showing natural musical ability, he excelled on the horn and earned awards at national levels for his soloing. In 1988, young Spence picked up his first set of decks and began spinning hip-hop and R&B at house and hall parties. After high school, he drifted away from the saxophone and sold his decks and wax. The silence didn't last long as Drew found himself hanging around in Vancouver's underground electronic music scene. 1994 rolled around and he was back spinning, only now he was blending up rude electronic rhythms, most notably Breakbeats. In a short time he was playing around Vancouver's warehouse circuit as DJ Slim, a name that fit his slender physique and freestyle mixing technique. Slim quickly became a staple in the electronic music underground by amazing party-goers across Canada and the western U.S. with his deep mixes and furious scratching. For obvious reasons, he has long since put the DJ Slim moniker to rest and is now billed simply as SPENCE. He remains notorious for delivering intensely skilled DJ performances that shock trainspotters and fellow DJs alike. In early 2001, Andrew picked up a saxophone for the first time in 9 years and the reunion has been prolific. He quickly aquired a mic rig and introduced live saxophone into his DJ sets. The result is a stunning performance by a veteran turntable technician and gifted instrumentalist. In the past 4 years Spence has elevated his musicianship through private study, performance, experimentation, and university level scholastics. His sax stylings have been featured on Vancouver house labels Leaf and Village, as well as on the world's biggest breaks label, Thursday Club Recordings Currently, Spence is currently signed as a producer to Toronto's Purephunk Recordings, with his first release scheduled for Summer '05. He spins for local Breaks squad, 20Hz, among others and is considered a venerable DJ talent from coast to coast and abroad. He plays sax with Vancouver's favorite funk machine, Five Alarm Funk as well as with many other acoustic and electric groups. Drew is also finishing his Jazz Studies diploma at Capilano College in North Vancouver. His future focus will remain on composition, production, and performance in both the electronic and acoustic realms. Akeel POUND // Vancouver With a music career now spanning more than a decade, this traditionally trained percussionist has brought his unique blend of tribal & indian rhythms to the world of beats and breaks. Fusing nu-skool breaks, progressive house and asian underground, all while drumming new beats and loops on the fly, you can't help but stare as he mixes with one hand and drums out a new beat with another. As POUND's live PA artist, Akeel brings a unique element only to be found at POUND that fuses live percussion with top quality mixing talent, having played with the likes of Max Graham, Atomic Hooligan, Sharaz, the Planet of the Drums tour (Dieselboy, AK1200, Dara), Mad Knob Technicians, Klute, Sage,DJ Swamp, Big League Chu, DJ Rap, Dig-Dug and many others. You'll see him drum new beats and rhythms on the spot, all while scratching and mixing on three turntables or working with his POUND brothers to create a unique audio experience that must be seen to be believed. Kyle Nordman Vivid // Swara Studio // Borderline Collective // Vancouver A distinguished DJ, producer, live performer, engineer and classically trained musician – Kyle Nordman defies any single classification. Since 1998 he has been building one of the most exciting resumes of any of the new breed Canadian DJ’s. With an extremely energetic and layered approach to peak time sets, involving all genres, Kyle Nordman has received the praise of hundreds of dancefloors around the world, including industry luminaries Hybrid, Phil K, Seb Fontaine and Richie Hawtin. In both studio and under his Amnes Live Pa performances, his ability to bring together organic elements, technical perfection and a minimal tech sound, has characterized him as one of the city’s most eclectic electronic performers. As a top 5 finalist in 2004 and 2005 for ‘Vancouver’s Best Electronica DJ’ award, he has once again been nominated in 2006. Following a surge of DJ Dates across Canada, Miami, Seattle, Japan, Mexico, and Costa Rica during the early part of his career, Kyle’s attention quickly returned to where it all began. With a musical progression and deeper knowledge of the global sound of dance music, Kyle’s return to production has been the true passion of the last 4 years. Re-edits, re-mixes, original productions, post-production and scores –with international support- have become the passion of his life. Driven by wide ranging influences, and 10 years of musical dedication, 2003 saw two new major achievements: The opening of his Swara Studio, and residency at Western Canada’s premier clubnight- Vivid. 2005 saw the start of his new label Borderline Collective, as well as a new Residency at Gorg-O-Mish After-hours, the 4th Friday of each month. HAHA!
Last year, we drove up a day early to set up and stuff. A whole bunch of cows would not move off the road. Twas hilarious. Later that night, a bear walked right over my car. Good thing there were only a few of us there and not the whole party. Mad fun crazy times! |
