Colour affects the sound of a guitar no more than the colour of the guitarist does. Paint does not alter the vibration, otherwise they would never apply finish to a guitar. Even natural looking guitars are coated with sealants and laquers.

A friend of mine ritually paints his guitar once a year on an annual acid trip. I tend to glue cannabis leaves to mine whenever I can aquire some. I've also seen someone wallpaper their guitar before. None of it has affected the sound. Even Neil Young slaps stickers and the like onto a guitar from now and then.

I want a cheap'ish used bass.. like a fender or somethin

For electric basses there aren't that many options...

But the same advice applies. Play a few really expensive basses, then settle into your price range.

What I did was rent a few basses from L&M for about a week. Take them home to my set up, use them in a few jams, and decide from there.

For shops check out tom lee, and long and mcquade, they will have the same styles. But also check into a few of the smaller shops, like not another guitar shop, over on granville, they occasionally have really neat basses.

Personally I play a P-bass, very versitile, but then everyone plays a pbass so it dosen't stand out.

Wide neck, medium range action, less frets, and a fat body for me. I also require a reinforced stress bar and bridge/saddle as I use excessively heavy strings.

No, don't buy those packs. I love fender, but those packs are pieces of shit. Have you ever played a squier guitar (the one that comes packaged in those). The quick start packs included the cheapest equipment possible. If you've ever played a guitar, then you'll notice the problems almost right away.

Squier.. aka the Mexican Stratocaster

My next purchase: Fender Telecaster (vintage, hopefully ;))

edit: after a new bass. (only $2300 left to save)

Digital Over will become famous soon enough
^You can get some really cool sounding licks with the B bender on a Telecaster...good guitar, great buy...

If anyone is looking for a used guitar, my brother is home from Chicago and I'm pretty sure he hasn't sold his ESP, LTD guitar...I'm pretty sure it has EMG pick ups on there and a floyd rose bridge...brilliant sounding guitar...I'll ask him when he gets home from his nightly dabotcheries
