(2008.01.28) NICK THAYER (Australia) @ Republic
Republic and Twisted Productions are proud to present... and in his first ever visit to Vancouver...
WHEN: Monday, January 28th WHERE: Republic Night Club -- 958 Granville Street -- 19+ venue, 2 pieces of ID required for entry NICK THAYER, Australia - MySpace.com - Nick Thayer - Thayer HQ, AU - Club / Breakbeat / Melodramatic Popular Song - www.myspace.com/djnickthayer Nick Thayer spent his childhood making strange noises out of strange things and spending all his money on guitars and questionable records. After a number of years in various pretentious funk-rock bands with various pretentious names Nick somehow ended up DJing at a mate’s party. “I borrowed some turntables in the morning, figured out how to use them in the afternoon, and DJed that night”, he recalls. Thayer soon discovered that records and turntables were easier to deal with than drummers and singers, and so decided to give the DJing thing a shot. Thayer found himself resident at one of Melbourne’s formative breaks nights ‘Out of Order’. With a weekly captive audience and a computer that seemed to work better whilst you kicked it, Thayer started ordering the beeping noises he was making into things resembling songs. It wasn’t long before he was inflicting these assortments of sounds onto dancefloors on a weekly basis, using them as testing grounds for tunes as they evolved. Deciding that this was the way forward Thayer started sending this stuff to labels all over the place. On the advice of interstate drinking buddy and fellow producer Bass Kleph he sent his music to Breaking Point. They said they liked it, but that was it. He sent them some more. They liked that also, signed it, and released 'Theme One'. Whilst all this was going on, Nick wasgetting booked all over the country. Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Byron, and even Wollongong gathered to watch him play records. He played the Boiler Room at Big Day Out, Melbourne metro alongside The Crystal Method, and had the Stanton Warriors shaking what their mothers gave them at an eventful New Years Eve show. Things evolve and for one reason and another, the ship that was Out of Order was berthed permanently, but there were new prospects on the horizon. Melbourne stalwart DJ Ransom invited Thayer to join the line-up at the institution that is Revolver’s The Late Show. 2005, and Thayer and Bass Kleph decided to come up with an excuse for more frequent interstate drinking sessions and starting writing together. The results were the massive ‘Fuckin the Groove’ and ‘Ante Up’, not to mention an unstoppable remix of the Drumattic Twins ‘Feelin Kinda Strange’ for UK mob leaders Finger Lickin, which went on to garner the award for Best Remix at the breakspoll awards 2005. Back in Melbourne and Thayer joined the team at Triple RRR radio, hosting ‘Beats Electric’, a weekly show, mirroring his musical tastes and incorporating anything electronic or beat related. Within six months he has had guests such as The Streets, Prodigy, Arrested Development, RJD2, Plump DJs, DJ Format, Boca45, Katalyst, d.i.g., not to mention offering plenty of emerging local talent the opportunity to get some exposure. The remixes started flowing, with the likes of JDS, Circuit Breaker, Malente, and Bosch all getting a going over, and original 12"s kept coming. March 2006 saw a monster UK /Europe tour with Nick playing Eargasm @ Fabric at the request of the Plump DJs, Boomslang in Cambridge, and a massive Tues night in Budapest with 1000 very excited Eastern block enthusiasts. In November 2006 Thayer parted ways with Breaking Point and the new found freedom opened a door of creativity. Collaborations with A Skillz, Lee Coombs, Slyde and Micah are all lined up for release, with remixes for The Stanton Warriors, Soul of Man and Deekline all ready to roll. The Outstanding Nick Thayer & Bass Kleph remix of "Feelin Kinda Strange" is by far the best remix anyone has ever done for us!" - Nick Slater (Drummatic Twins) "Nick Thayer : Keeps it tight, lets it groove and smacks it up - one of only a few dj's who can program a set without playing badly produced tearout, speeded up big beat, cheese or prog nonsense. " Dominic B (Stanton Warriors) "Nick Thayer ... came on after me and ripped out an amazing selection of funky breaks tunes, most of which were his own productions and remixes. I was begging him for copies by the end of the night." A Skillz in iDJ magazine. TICKETS: - $8 advance from Twisted, Promotions, Vancouver Last edited by Kraig; Jan 09, 08 at 07:33 PM. |
