Dj Nameless
Who is Dj Nameless?
I'm a producer, old-school raver, analog junkie. I began Dj'ing in my bedroom with a crappy pitch controlled Sony turntable, cd player, cheapo Radio Shack mixer, and my sisters tape recorder. I used to make trance mix tapes for my friends with little happy face stickers on the cassettes. So, why hasn't anyone ever heard of you if you're such an old-school DJ? Well, I was kinda scared to DJ when I was younger. I didn't have proper decks, just those cheap pitch controlled tables with knobs. I knew my music was good, but I also knew the competition in Vancouver was fierce. Did that stop you, did you call it quits? Of course not, I was dedicated. I took a trip to Mexico City and brought my record bag with me. I applied at a Club 303, a very modern looking Techno club. They signed me up to play a few gigs as DJ123. It was a great experience, because a lot of famous Dj's were playing at that club (including: Joey Beltram, Derrick May, Kenny Larken, Juan Atkins, Richard F, T-1000, Green Velvet, etc.) Anyways, I had a great time meeting with these fantastic promoters and Djs. What happened when you got back to Vancouver? It was the same old same old. I made a demo CD with a company called "Modern Groove (RIP)" and played for a couple raves, otherwise I wasn't doing too much except buying vinyl at Futuristic Flavor and Bassix. At this time, I was more into creating my own music. I put the word Rave into Ebay and I found this machine called the Rave-o-lution. The guy selling it was local and he wanted $700 for it. I had no idea what it was or anything, but it looked fucking kool, so I bought it. That's when I started collecting gear, after that I bought a Roland Juno 1, Juno 106, MC-202, TR-606, Novation BassStation, etc. I was sequencing it all on an Atari Falcon I also bought locally and was running Cubase. It was totally amazing and Dj'ing took a back seat for a few years. OK, so did you get back into Dj'ing? Yes, I had a few gigs in Vancouver because I knew all these Dj's and recorded my first track with DJ Ali. I played at Club Viva and had a residency at Tribeca before I left for Japan 2 years ago. Japan? That's right. My girlfriend is Japanese and lives in Japan, (she's a doll) so I moved out to Japan to see her and teach English. Besides teaching, I brought a big bag of vinyl and actively looked for work as a DJ. Well, as you can imagine, I hooked-up lots of gigs and was able to Dj to a nice size crowd as well as showcase my production skills on some decent club monitors. Japan has given me the confidence to really play to the crowd and learn what it takes to make it work. You're back in Vancouver? Absolutely, I'm back. I'm having a free party this weekend in Gastown- Feb. 17th. I've invited some wicked local talent to the decks. Jay Tripwire was going to play, but he's going to Europe this Thursday. I was going to ask my friend Nikki Delgado, but I think he's going to be too busy. So, we have Rhia Wellbelove, Dj Aaron, PPcock, and myself. Honestly, I think these Dj's have the integrity to bring a good vibe to the party. I've been going out to clubs these past few weeks and have been so disappointed with Dj's like Luke McKeehan, Dickeydoo, and others. I mean, what happened to good music and bumpin bass bins? So, I'm back with a vengeance, I'm here to replace the old batteries and put in some new ones. What's next? We have some industry types coming to this party, people who move and shake the dance community. Hopefully my colleagues and I will get some recognition for being on the cutting edge. Also, I plan on releasing a full album in the very near future with some amazing trax I've been producing for the last 5 years. I also will try to get my hand inside these cookie jars we call clubs in Vancouver. It's a little early to speculate, but the future is wide open. Please have a listen to my older mix on Wax DJ.
