I really don't understand the concept of a radio staion being gay unless in fact it promotes homosexuality.
Or if its a boy radio station that likes another boy radio station that would make sense i guess. otherwise Gay just doesn't seem to cut it. |

it's not supposed to be a hip hop station, it's never been advertised as a hip hop station. It's an urban station.
i think they do a great job. Obviously it's not intended to appeal to the 'underground' heads, it's a commercial station for fucks sakes. I think it's great for vancouver, it's another avenue to promote our nightlife scene, and even if it only reaches the most mainstream end of that demographic, it still helps the scene on a whole. sorry to say it, but you'd have to be pretty naive to have expected anything more from them. Nowhere in this world is there a commercial radio station that plays any significant amount of non-mainstram music. The Beat do their part by playing some good jams alongside the cheese, and by supporting artists and events in their own community. I wouldn't expect many 'undergroundlier-than-thou' twentysomething post-raver types to enjoy their music programming, but they didn't become vancouver's #1 rated station within a year of their launch because they 'suck' or are 'gay'. |

BBC's not commercial radio man! it's government funded.
And... i don't think there's a city on this planet who's nightlife doesn't kick vancouver's in the ass. Commercial hiphop/rnb is dominating the club scene all over north america right now, and believe me, it's not going anywhere any time soon. like it or no, that's sound is gonna be the mainstream for a long time to come. And if it brings more people out to the clubs, it's indirectly helping all of us who work in the nightlife industry because when clubs make more money, they are more open to trying different things on different nights. my point is, nobody is forcing this music on anybody - if you don't dig it don't listen. But it is what the masses want, so who are we to criticize people like The Beat for giving it to them? Business is business. |

Vancouver has been asking for an urban station for a long time. I think Vancity is one of the last major Canadian cities to get an urban station. TO, Winnipeg & MTL all beat us to the bang.
The Beat is like any other major radio station, they have a specific playlist that they must follow. They usually play the same shit over and over and it does suck. Unfortunetly they have to play what the masses want and its usually Ja Rule, J-Lo and etc. Also, since its a Canadian station, they have to play a certain amount of Canadian content. And there isn't as much out there as there should be. However, when it comes to live shit J-Swing is off the hook. This dude can seriosly cut and mix. He can't juggle, but whatever this dude seriosuly reminds me of Dj Rectangle. As for Supafly this dude is one of the worst DJ's I've heard. Fade in, fade out. ~Tim PS - If your forced to listen to something on the radio because you aint got no CD player in the car, The BEat will do. |
