grandmaster flash
after waiting in line for a long ass time i finally got into see arrested development do "everyday people."
then grandmaster came on and rocked the house. he's not a very skilled dj technically, but he definitely knows how to work the crowd. his hype man is a bit of a pervert. :kam: i gotta remember to hand out notes telling girls to come back to my hotel room when im famous. :PartEkid: |

hey now hey now... maybe your just jealous.... ahhhhh no.
anyways, i had an amazing time. arrested development surprised the hell outta me, and put on an amazing performance, the girls were incredible on stage, and when they did redemption song... oh my. the grandmaster came out, and he started with phil collins in the air tonight... PHIL COLLINS... he won my heart at that moment. excellent performance. |

Arrested Development's energy was quite impressive. I got there for their last 3 songs and thoroughly enjoyed each one. Crazy base player thinks he's playing a 6 string or something! Holy skills.
Grandmaster Flash said it best himself, "Not the best, not the worst, but the first". I've seen a lot more skill behind the decks. I agree with Aaron though he knows how to rock the crowd. Coulda done with a little less bravado before the set. Maybe you get that right if you've been around for thirty years. |

GRANDMASTER! CUT'S FASTER!
Felt like I was in the 80's at a block party. The man played the breaks of all the classics startin "way, way, way WAY BACK" as far as 71'. Hot damn! Man, he's got doubles of all the gem records, whata guy. Amazing crowd interaction, I was screaming all night. Agreed, not the most technical, but he knows the jams! Your a FOOL if you missed! Loved how it was like "Hip Hop 101 with Grandmaster Flash," he was out there to teach where hip hop came from... loved it! Only caught the end of arrested development, but I heard the drum/bass solos and that's all I needed. Bass solo into billy jean, that was HOT! Wigglesworth- yeah, I was right there when that girl was getting all excited about getting that note from hype man. Then she started talking to Flash's manager, and he was straight CUTTING her hard, told her to do up her fly and shit. Oh man it was funny. |

plus it was the guy who was on stage with grandmaster... not grandmaster himself. very very cheesey. i didnt sleep all of today as i got home at 4:30 and had to leave for school an hour later... but fuck it was amazing, and as bad as my body feels it was worth it ten times over. |

Arrested Development was excellent.
Grand Master was neither particularly grand, nor masterful. You'd think with 33 years to practice he'd have learned some technical skill. Instead, he dropped (rather poorly) a bunch of pop tracks that everyone knew so that people were so busy looking at each other going "oh my god! I know this song!" that they forgot to notice that he sucked. CASH GRAB. But yeah, Arrested Development was tight - they really knew how to communicate with the crowd, and had a good mix of new material and classics. I felt they were worth my money. |

I've heard his sets before, and this is what he does. plays songs that everyone loves, cuts, does his thing.
he admits that he's not the best dj, but he's not trying to be. this wasnt a show of technical skill. it was a celebration of hip hop. grandmaster flash is more hip hop then anyone...ever. he was the first to play breaks cohesively (as kool herc was the first to play breaks, but didnt play them the way we know it today, grandmaster flash was the first to do it right.) he deserve's a shit load of respect as one of the founders of hip hop. if you want to see a technical show, go see a turntablist. if you want to see the biggest legend of all time do his thing, then last night was right for you. Well maybe I'd have been a little more impressed if they hadn't subjected us to 20 minutes of hype before hand and constant ego explosions from the stage. Yes, he deserves respect for being a founder, for innovating. And I do respect that. What I don't respect is a stale performance. |

thats my whole point though. it wasnt a stale performance.
thats his act. you think he's been sitting in his room practicing the last few years anyway? no. hes been busy touring the world making 5 grand or more a show. people go to see grandmaster flash. they dont go to see a crazy technical performance thats going to blow them away. besides, the show was only ten bux. thats a serious deal for this show.
