Groove 2 Announcement

Groove 1 and 2 were both supposed to be at Douglas College. I won't get into why we didn't end up getting the venue both times but a group of people messed that up for everybody

As for Groove 2 we found a replacement venue, but at the last minute they backed out of it due to the fact that they had a church meeting the morning after our party. So after searching for a while and not coming up with anything that wasn't booked We settled for the venue we used.
The last thing we wanted to do is have Groove 2 beside where Groove 1 got busted. Especially in such a sketchy heaty area. It looks pretty silly on us

We put a lot of effort into this show by booking talent that is never seen at a small event like this. It's a big risk but there's just something so cookie cutter about bringing big acts to a club or a massive. Everyone does that. where's the originality? I think that for the most part people apreciate seeing a big headliner at a small vibey show
AGROculture has never believed in paying it safe. There's nothing like the satisfaction like taking big risks and having a party go off perfectly.
We've thrown around 20 underground events in many different venues, including a porn theatre. 4 have been busted.
Thats a really good success rate but Unfortunatly when it happens twice in a row some people, especially newer ravers who don't know us very well, lose faith in us.
If I were in their shoes I'd probably think twice about AGROparties also

The Groove series were meant to have that underground feel. A 1 room party with all kinds of music but with big talent. For the most part people who buy tickets for an underground party assume the risks that it might get shut down early. Nowdays though I don't think thats very fair because a lot people aren't up to date with what kind of party these are.

I think because of that we're gonna take some time and restructure what our plans are for the rest of the year. As cookie cutter as it is, we'll probably just stick to clubs and venues like Riverside, Agrodome, Martimes and other Legal Venues.
However like KISS 2003 and 2004 we'll ensure that our line ups and shows are not only top notch but original.
That doesn't mean we're quitting throwing underground shows, we're just gonna take some time and wait for a proper venue to open up

We're currently working on compensation for anyone who bought tix to Groove
So look out for it in the next little while. As a lot of you know, like in the past we'll do everything in our power to keep everyone happy.

Remember SUPPORT THOSE WHO SUPPORT YOU! We may have bad things happen but for the most part most of our shows go on without problems and are absolutly legendary! Don't believe me?.....ask around

this may be just my opinion, i don't know how others feel about it, but i think the promoters SHOULD believe in playing safe. taking big risks is cool if you're the only ones that get hurt if something happens, but when you're charging money from other people now your big risks are hurting the wallets of many others.

this comment doesn't apply to how you set up Groove and Groove 2, or the mistakes with the venues and such, since i don't know anything about that except from what you just said.

i just wanted to put in my two cents on how i feel about promoters taking big risks.

What I meant by taking big risks is by booking big talent that you would not usually see at an underground party with cheap prices. The price tag on Aquasky is more expensive than everything else at the party put togethor
Usually promoters would play it safe by booking a cheap line up.

State of the Scene Address

Its been a long while since I have done one of these, but with the recent events, I feel now is the best time.

Everyone must realize a few things. You'd all be surprised to know that there is almost more work that goes into these smaller underground shows than the big massives. For these underground shows Dave and I, with some help of course, have to do everything ourselves. At the massives, companies are paid to set everything up. So for the amount of hours Agro and I put into the Groove shows and to get shut down so early really truly is awful.

People ask why we dont get permits and do legal shows. As any respected promoter would tell you, a legal show for 300 people or so would have n insane budget, and would surely lose lots of money. So no promoter would ever be willing to take the risk.

For some time now, the 'underground' scene was able to strive again witht he availability of Douglas College. A lot of promoters who had never done any events ever were able to capatilise on the free venue and do shows. No witht he unfortunate events that happened there, you will see that 90% of the promoters who used it willnever do a show again.

On another note, Agro and I always support the local talent, and the DJs who play for us know it. In response to Soda, I agree yes the club scene is the best place for headlining talent, but it so much more fun seing an act in an underground vibey show. We bring in headliners to increase the excitement and bring some originality to the shows.

This brings me to my next point, even doing KISS for 2 years and other major events over the past many years, I know that a 5000 person show at the PNE or Plaza to me is not a 'true' rave. Its an all night dance party.

People shun the word 'rave', but to me it means a great time of my life spent promoting and enjoying the scene. A 'rave' to me isnt a big venue with an escalator, but its a dirty warehouse with drip pouring off the walls. I dont wanna know where the venue is, or what it looks like. At one point the was so many Plaza raves to me it was simply the city's new legal all ages afterhours.

Regardless, I love doing big shows as well, and will continue producing them with Dave, details will be released shortly. However, my true passions will always lie in the underground, the scene that made 'raving' my addiction for so many years. Those who know me best know my passion and understanding of the music, the people, and the scene in general. I support all the promoters and djs, and continue to push on. It is unfortunate that I really feel that last night I stood in the death of Vancouver's underground scene. I only hope some of you out there feel my passion.

Look out for George Acosta June 30, and Johan Gielen July 16 and a lot more clubnights from my new company Bassline Entertainment, always alongside my partner in crime AGROculture.

one love,
Rick

Well, what can I say? Agro Parties weaned me back into the Rave scene after my little break. I've never been to a bad one (or one that was shut down). Kudos to you guys for actually explaining the problem, and taking some time to find a solution. If you don't stop throwing parties, I won't stop coming to them. :)

This whole wave of rave-crashing that's appeared in the last month has been pretty unfortunate, with the Grooves and Unite especially. However, I wouldn't say the underground rave scene is dead, or even getting shut down all over. Both Elevation and 2 Th3 Mo0n survived, as I'm going to imagine a lot of small parties will continue to. This looks like an unfortunate bump on the road, but lets face it, a lot of people don't like that raves exist, so it's not always going to be an easy thing to pull off.
