Massive Change: The Future of Global Design - Vancouver Art Gallery Exhibit
This past weekend I finally went to this VancouverArtGallery exhibit I've been meaning to see for a while. Pretty impressive; just as cool as I suspected but better than I imagined.
The exhibit presents, in very creative, artistic ways, progressive ideas on social, economic, ecological and technological problems (or trends) the human race faces today and into the next half century. The implications of the (I agree) inevitable globalization of earth are presented with optimism by offering alternate, though not necessarily new ways of living. The exhibit is meant to be a journey that takes you through illustrated possibilities for the future. I think it acheives its desired effect. In conclusion it seems that we can hold hope for us and future generations to live comfortably on this earth. And alas perhaps we're not all as fucked as we think we are. (The U.S. starting WWIII excluded). With one requisite condition: Massive Change. Though not impossible change. It falls just as much under the category of science and technology as art, but it is made more absorbing by the artistic presentation. If it still sounds boring (which it shouldn't!) or you don't normally like art or science just go friggin see it anyway!! It's that good. The website which explains things well does not do justice for the actual things you will see. www.massivechange.com The 'Future of Global Design' exhibit masterminded by ingenious Canadian designer Bruce Mau, is here in Vancouver until January 3rd 2005 and is the world premiere of it (yay Vancouver!). After that its going to Toronto and Chicago. I'm going again soon because I missed some things *la-la* the first time. Regular $15 to get in, $10 with a student card, and $5 (by donation) on Thursday evening 5 - 9 pm!! The gallery isn't open on Monday's though. There are 3 floors to the gallery. If you really like to ponder, leave 2 or more hours to trip out. There is even a Segway prototype that you can test-ride!! Which is shown with a lady on it in the photo I took (no cameras allowed) below of the entrance. I photoshoped the people to make it cooler if you're wondering. I went and caught this show a couple weeks ago with a girlfriend of mine. I found it to be extremely thought provoking and really interesting to see the way that technoligy is advancing as we approach the new year.
I defienately reccomend everyone go see this show. |

I made a thread about this a while ago too.. i STILL haven't gone. I've been meaning to but with work and now will school (and of semester exams/finals) it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to go under after the school/work crazy is over.

i went....you need 3 hours at least
bruce mau aside, it's a pretty decent show...like science world for old people...many interesting statistics, some cool images, alot of reading, and quite informative... however such an odd mix of content that i found it hard to piece together....i think mr mau tried to do too much in one shot....full review later after it all "sinks in" |

i saw it yesterday and thought it was OK. The exhibition is geared almost totally towards the functional aspects of design without any regard for its artistic evolution. argh. I felt the name of the show was a bit misleading in that respect. there were also no segway rides going on when i was there. :..(
anyway I did really enjoy the bit on new construction materials. go intelligel. |

Artisticness (w?) shows in the presentation of the ideas; with the huge taller than people exhibit items, attention to detail, use of light and dark and interactive question asking features. Perhaps to better inspire people and increase acceptance of the ideas? Buy in. Yeah the ideas themselves aren't really artistic. Coulda been in Science World but the Art Gallery rocks too. That roof. Heh. Imagine a party in there on the 2nd floor.... |
