Jay-auto
JAY-AUTO [email protected] genres: drum and bass/dub/ragga/garage/hip-hop/rock/mash-up/motown/soul affiliations:automatic/relick how long have you been spinning for? SINCE '93 What originally hooked you in to the DJ scene? All kinds of different things, i'd been into alternative and electronic music and the clubbing scene for a while before that and was friends with guys like Czech and Minute Maid (aka Shawn Brawley), so it just seemed a natural progression. Other than that I'd have to say DJ Dan was a big influence, and catching Moby and the Shamen at a rave in Seattle. What type of music do you specialize in? I have two long running residencies playing drum and bass and ragga jungle, so obviously those two genres. For drum and bass I prefer things a little more mellow and on the rolling tip like Calibre or High Contrast, but i spin just about everything. Other than that i buy a lot of dub and old reggae and dancehall, i've got a substantial old-school hip-hop collection, lots of rock and punk, and if I could play whatever i wanted it'd be a set loaded up with classic soul and R&B, although that's hard to mix, at least in the way that most people define "mixing". What's the most expensive vinyl you've ever purchased, and how much was it? I paid $40 for a copy of "Little Fluffy Clouds" by the Orb once....There are probably a couple of others up in that range, but that's the first one that comes to mind..... What is your most treasured record, and why? Hard to pick a most treasured one, my collection runs well over 3500 records. I do have a couple in there worth $200-$300 on eBay, but they're not records that I'd ever play out, they're just really rare, for instance i have a original German picture disc pressing of the Beatles "Sergeant Pepper's" that's worth a mint. I guess if i had to pick what's most precious to me it'd be my collection of early breakbeat hardcore on labels like Suburban Bass, White House, and Moving Shadow, the stuff that i was buying when i first got my decks...good times! What events have you played at? Many, many, many...I don't play parties as much anymore these days, mainly because I work Friday and Saturday nights until late pretty much every weekend, but in the past I've opened for: ABSTRACT ACCIDENTAL HEROES ADAM F AK 1200 ANDY C APHRODITE A-SIDES BAD COMPANY BAILEY BARON B.L.I.M. BRYAN GEE CALIBRE CAPITAL J CAUSE 4 CONCERN CRAZE DARA DAVE DUB DB DECODER DIE DIESELBOY DILLINJA DOM AND ROLAND ED RUSH EMPRESS FREAKY FLOW FRICTION GENERAL MALICE GOLDIE GROOVERIDER HIGH CONTRAST HYPE INVADERZ JOHN B JOHN ROLODEX KENNY KEN KILLA KELA KLUTE KRINJAH KRUST LONDON ELEKTRICITY LTJ BUKEM LUSH MAMPI SWIFT MARCUS INTALEX MARCUS VISIONARY MARKY MATHEMATICS MAYHEM MC ARMANNI MC BASIM MC CONRAD MC DARRISON MC FOXY MC J-MESSINIAN MC L-NATURAL MC SKIBADEE MC STAMINA MC TALI MC WARREN G MIXOLOGISTS PENDULUM PERFECT COMBINATION PHANTASY QZEN R.A.W. RAY KEITH RYMETYME SCISSORKICKS SHY FX SLIP & SLIDE SOUNDMURDERER SS STAKKA AND SKYNET STORM SUV TECHNICAL ITCH THE USUAL SUSPECTS TIPPER TOTAL SCIENCE TWISTED INDIVIDUAL ZINC What national/International clubnights have you played at? Just mainly ones in the Pacific Northwest, Alberta, Washington State etc... Have you got any DJ horror stories? Do hangovers count? Are you a resident DJ? Now that Automatic has closed it's door, my only residency would be Bodyrock Fridays at Library Square with Matty and Dana D, and the Re-lick, if it gets back off the ground now that Josh "Man-o-Lantern" Angst has moved back to the states. Any other information? Lots i guess, what would you like to know, just some random fact? OK, I make the best Caesars...so there. Oh, and the Georgia Straight once voted the apartment I was living in at the time "Best place to stare at sweaty asses" in their "Best of Vancouver" issue. They missed out on voting the fitness club across the street "Best place to stare at a guy in boxer shorts smoking a bong". Last edited by automatic; Oct 31, 06 at 10:29 AM. |
