Lil' Flip: July 7, 2006 @ Plush
http://www.sonymusic.com/artists/LilFlip/ July 7, 2006 Amid the flourishing underground rap scene of Houston, Lil' Flip rose to quick and prosperous fame after his independently released Leprechaun album broke through to a national audience, prompting the young rapper's signing to Universal Records soon after. Nicknamed the Freestyle King, Flip as a teen initially won the attention of the immortalized DJ Screw, who ushered the rapper into his loose-knit Screwed Up Click. The affiliation brought instant respect for Flip throughout Texas as well as the greater South, and his Leprechaun album capitalized on that, moving an impressive number of units for an independently released album. The album's slowly mounting yet ultimately broad reach and Flip's youthful appeal attracted Universal Records, who signed the barely 20-year-old to a major-label contract in 2002 and released Undaground Legend later in the year. Driven by the lead single, "The Way We Ball," as well as a remix of "I Can Do Dat," a hit previously released on The Leprechaun, the album extended Flip's audience nationally and heralded him as one of the South's most promising young rappers of the early 2000s. In 2002, Flip returned with Undaground Legend, a slick sophomore effort. It would go practically unnoticed. Two years later, Flip returned to the scene with the more expansive double-disc set U Gotta Feel Me. The set spawned a couple sizable hits, namely "Game Over (Flip)" and "Sunshine," and brought Flip the national fame he'd long been courting. With that fame came competition, and it wasn't long before Flip was beefing with T.I. for the right to don the crown of King of the South. Flip kept his profile public not only with such drama but also with a string of mixtapes, most notably the Freestyle Kings series, which reached its sixth volume in 2005. Flip released his second Sony album, I Need Mine, in February 2006. Along with: Kanabliss http://kanabliss.com/ Kanabliss, born Samuel Pratap, is a west coast vet. Kanabliss has been putting pen to pad since the early ninties. By the age of fourteen he was already rocking shows, but it's not until he met Mark 'Audio Ninja' Ellis that he could really take the next step. Ninja had a studio, but up until that point only had experience with rock bands. Yet, instead of a barrier, the band oriented background would prove essential to Kanabliss' sound. Where other producers sampled funky synths, Ninja played them. While the duo were getting into their groove, Kanabliss was simultaneously cultivating his interest in lowriders. In 1996 he and his brothers .5 Sack and J-Roc founded East Van's first lowrider club, Eastside G Ridez, which was renamed West Coast Kingz in 1998. While most rappers try simply to get the biggest name guests, Kanabliss knows his roots and on his debut album Adventures of the Supaspliff he has guest spots from left coast icons Spice 1, Baby Beesh (aka Baby Bash), and even one half of the Dogg Pound, Daz Dillinger. Kanabliss is no stranger to Los Angeles or Las Vegas, and recorded his song with Daz in Cali. With momentum like that, why slow down? He and his brothers have a video in the can for the cut Fiji Islandaz, have already shot the footage for a video with Daz, and Kanabliss is halfway through a sophomore, The West Coast Dose, that has appearances from Too $hort, Rappin' 4Tay, Crooked I, Dogg Pound and Boo-Ya Tribe. Not to mention he’s working on a collaborative project with Vic Vodka and P-Man (formerly the group CIA). This is an emcee still intent on riding ‘til the wheels fall off.
