Name: Drew Smith, aka MUX (short for 'multiplexor') Email: [email protected] Contact #: 604.626.8741 Genre Of Music: Live-PA rave techno (aka melodic hard acid trance?) Affiliations: Pod6, BHC, RebelSoundSystem Website: http://mux.ca How long have you been playing live-pas for? My first show was in 1999, and aside from a two-year break, I've been pretty much going constantly since then. What originally hooked you into the live-pa scene? I was a bar-band guitarist on the east coast for a few years in college when I got bitten by the electronic bug in like 1996. I started surrounding myself with electronic music, but it wasn't until seeing a music video from the Crystal Method, where they were playing live, that it crossed my mind that electronic music could be a performance thing. I had to combine the previous stage/pa experience with the new fascination with electronic gear... Most expensive vinyl that you have paid for? - how much was it? The last record I've owned was a 45 of Gowan's "(You're A) Strange Animal" in grade three. I am not, and have never been, a DJ. :) What events have you played at? Loads, quite a few parties and clubnights around town and in other cities. I'm not much of a studio producer, so I just focus on the live shows... Have you got any live-pa horror stories? Loads - that's part of the charm of live-pa. You build yourself this network of machines that all do some little task, then spend all your time learning to make that network sound as good as it can, then practice and practice and practice, so that when you're on stage and one of the bits of gear decides to misbehave, you can just roll with it and keep the beats going and the set moving forward. When I played in Richmond, Virginia a couple of years ago, my sampler didn't survive the flight - I got on the internet and found a guy who had the same sampler locally, and he brought it down to the show to let me use it, but I couldn't get the sample dumps to load into his machine. I had to do the whole set with no samples at all, which really sucked at the time - the recording later on showed that it was pretty ok, just much more minimal and electro-y than originally intended. *shrug*, people liked it, so it was ok I guess. Are you a resident DJ, if so where? No - it's pretty hard to build a whole new set every week. :) What gear do you use? Currently I'm sequencing mostly with an Akai MPC1000. The basslines, drumloops and vocal loops come from a (closed) IBM ThinkPad running Ableton Live 5, lead synths are from a Nord Micro Modular, x0xb0x and a Roland SH-101 (driven using CV/Gate from the x0xb0x). I control the laptop (clip launches, FX controls, and mixing) with a Behringer BFR2000 MIDI controller. Any other information? Loads, if you've got a specific question feel free to ask. :) |
