Some people will do anything to avoid actually doing their job. It's sad really.
One person at my job got pulled into the office because they basically refused to do their work - every time a call would come in they would do nothing until the caller gave up and hung up. This person got busted on it a few times, and when they gave them their final warning they started this big sob story about how they need the job and that they'll commit suicide. So the next week they get busted again for doing the exact same thing. Jeez. If you need the job so much HOW ABOUT DOING IT?
Not saying you're necessarily the same case, but it's really easy for people to fall into the trap of refusing to do any further than the bare minimum standard that it keeps them from getting fired. Even then, they bend/break the rules if they think they can get away with it.
If, however, you really are putting the extra effort into it, maybe you're in the wrong field of work?
