China going too far? Google.com ban
NEWS
Tests performed by an industry insider and by the BBC News Online have confirmed that China has blocked access to the U.S.-based Google search engine. Google has been popular in China due in part to its ability to handle Chinese language searches. This latest form of censorship is believed to be a result of an upcoming November 8th Communist Party Congress. China has never blocked an Internet search engine before, according to analysts. NetEase.com, a China-based website, ran an article confirming that Google was indeed being blocked. The article said the block was due to results listing pornography and Falun Gong content, along with content which could undermine national security. Currently, there are an estimated 45.8 million Chinese online. Many Chinese access the Internet from Internet cafés, which are mandated by the Chinese government to install content-blocking software. The software currently blocks up to 500,000 sites. On July 15th Yahoo! signed a "Public Pledge on Self-discipline for China Internet Industry" which gave the Chinese government content control over Yahoo's Chinese site. Yahoo! was still available on Monday from within China, even though it uses the Google search engine. |

1984 sound familiar???
My prediction... Only a matter of time until you'll need a permit for a website. You'll sign a contract and if you break it, permit will be taken away and site shutdown. It may appear that the internet is too big to control, but eventually the government (or some sort of "Internet World Wide Federation) will be directly involved and control all tier 1 isp's. |
