XP SP2 is the best operating system that Microsoft has put out, hands down. It's stable, it's reliable, it's fast (when you turn off the defaults) and just about every windows-based application in circuit today is XP compatible. Where it lacks: Memory management (starts lagging around the 5th or 6th app opened), 3D desktop (which they were supposed to fix with Vista but failed miserably) and working mostly in the administrator userspace makes it easier for software exploits to do serious damage to the computer (again, something they tried to fix in Vista and just ended up creating more headaches). Oh, and the countless spyware and virus apps that are available for windows. But that's also because it's the most prominent system for non-security minded people and therefore just propogates the culture, not just because of shoddy security design (though that is a part of it). XP is the industry standard currently for desktop OS, and even though Vista is crippling Microsoft's ability to maintain that title in the future, XP still reigns supreme thus far. |

Linux has gone GUI so much so Ubuntu Linux came out, and in 7.10 surpasses WIN98 and is almost neck and neck with XP, sometimes outperforming it. Even so, I've seen people so used to XP's point and click that when X Windows crashes, think the computer is broken and is in need to a reinstall, only to turn it on three days later to find Xorg is back up with whatever Desktop GUI they got, be it Gnome, KDE or XFCE4. If the GUI crashes on XP, then it's almost BSOD time.:worried: |

Whenever someone mentions anything about windows some Linux freak comes on, throws a bunch of technical jargon around and basically tries to act superior to everyone. First off, it's a hardware problem, I've figured out what it is, and now it's just getting the part and reinstalling. Second, not everyone wants to install linux. My computer is used for the occasional recording, listening to music and surfing the net. I use it maybe an hour a night, along with my roomate who is learning to use computers for the first time in her life. Linux is not for me. I've tried using it years ago. I'm sure it makes you feel better, but linux is not the be all and end all of computers. |

People don't mind restarting their computer every once in a while. Sure, with linux you can always just ctrl+alt+bkspc but sometimes even that doesn't work. Ubuntu has made things easier. And if you know enough about computers to properly ask for help (basically, if you're an intermediate computer user) then you should be able to use Ubuntu. But it's still not for beginners. |

If he had to fork out for XP, then I'd think he'd be making ends meet after coughing up $630 for rent and internet like the Boston Pizza waitress I met the other day. Linux is not only better than XP; it's cheaper and can still get you on the net even without a desktop gui atop Xorg. Tho Puppy Linux with busybox and surfing with Dillo is probably ok on the cheap computer I mentioned earlier. |
