from: Mexico Business Etiquette Customs Practice Mexico Time and Punctuality The English are so well known for their punctuality that in Mexico, there's a saying people use after agreeing a time with you: "Hora Inglesa", literally translated means "English Time", the inference is that the time agreed should be strictly adhered to. In Mexico, time is not regarded as the panacea that it is in other western economies. Time is a very flexible thing in Mexico. As such, don't be offended or surprised if your contacts in Mexico don't show up in timely fashion: tardiness can be due to a range of different things and if it happens there will always a be a 'good reason' for it! For social events, you could show up 30 minutes later than the time on the invitation. Even back home, people rarely show up for parties at the exact time; preferring to arrive a little later on: in Mexico this is quite common. If you are sending out invitations to a social gathering, keep in mind that guests won't show up at the time you state, and importantly - it is not customary to define an 'end time' for social occasions in Mexico. Sometimes invitations will specify a time at which the event will end; in Mexico, this should be left open-ended. |

This only really bothers me if its in the workplace. Why is it the people who show up late consistently also take 45 smoke breaks in a day and still end up leaving early?
I'm always punctual at work but outside of work I try my best and I usually am, but it ends up happening sometimes. I'm just a bull who hates to be rushed :P |

That's exactly why I never make plans with you unless I'm already on my way, Dave. It's never "Hey, do you want to hit up that Irish joint tomorrow after work?" Rather, it's "Hey Dave, I'm on the skytrain right fucking now. Let's hit up that Irish pub."

Actually, if you can figure out Farshad-time you'll always know exactly when he'll arrive. It's a confusing scale involving logarithms and step functions; it depends heavily on the proximity of ETA vs. time ETA was made....
But if you take that all into account he is always exactly on time. |

Yeah, in the end it was pretty lame because I actually saw them 3 hours after said plans were supposed to happen.
While waiting I studied and made myself look pretty, but next time I'm just canceling/doing something else after waiting 15-20 mins. edit - Laska, I don't live in Van, but when I do I'll keep your punctuality in mind. |

Work, school, and appointments... 10-0 min early.
But when it comes to social gatherings, I ease up. Must be the lack of structure. When your meeting people to relax and un wined, I dont like be pressured or stressed trying to be right on time. Not that I mean to be rude, but than I dont really expect others to be prompt either. However I find my friends and I dont really make a set time to meet up. I usually warn people that I often run late and we usually phone each other back and forth zeroing in on an approx time. A lot of people show up late too for social gatherings anyways. In fact I know certain people who always do. So keeping that in mind I plan to show up 30 min late also. I guess part of it is knowing your friends and working with them.
