Endless email viruses

Since Christmas I've been bombarded with viruses most likely from the same person who has no clue their computer is plagued with them. Get with the program and get a virus scanner you twit :y:.

The virus itself is an exe file (waiting to be executed) that arrives every day with a new header. The content has the same horseshit text attached.

Example of email:

The thing is, you'd really hope that people would learn...even people like your parents or grandparents who are bad enough with computers....that it's NEVER a good idea to open attachments in weird e-mails from people you don't know!

im lucky enough to run my mail server.

right now im also using popfile, which uses bayesian statistics. basicly it uses statistics on words, html, senders and the like from all the email you have archived and makes rules based on that. super-interesting and it works really, really well to classify my mail.

but its only as good as the mail you feed it, so before it works you have to feed it mail you like to recieve as well as the mail you dont.

anyways, anyone who is moderate computer geek can install it, though it is kind of hairy for a newbie. go to http://popfile.sourceforge.net/ . it works with outlook as well as eudora... its perl based.

you would think outlook work have SOME sorta app to help combat this shit.. basically I have all my attatchment emails moved to a "attachments" folder in outlook, and all attachments are locked (cant open em) unless u move them out of the folder.

That stupid screensaver virus, ah!!

I was getting like 4823048923 a day.. and all from the same person. It happened to be one of my good friends and i emailed her to let her know, helped her remove it and now it's stopped!


It was so annoying though.. ahh. virus' bug me.

The thing is, most people use Outlook Express or Outlook...and the default option for the preview pane is "ON"...which means if they just click on it once it previews in the lower portion of the screen and with many viruses this is enough to trigger it. Eevn the ones who have 'learned' to not open anything wind up previewing and activating the virus even if they right-click on the email and choose 'Delete'. And many of these people aren't sophisticated enough to change their display options.

Personal pet peeve is those who don't use a good anti-virus program...if U can afford a computer U can afford decent AV software that auto-updates without U having to do anything. Nothings 100%, sure, but it really helps.

Personal pet peeve #2 is people who call me (since I work as internet tech support) and scream @ me cuz they got a virus...next they'll blame me for the children's cold.

but yeah im going on a little hunt today for a new email app with some better virus filtering.. I will post my findings later
