why i hate my job

my company is too cheap to hire on additional temps to help out with the workload which is always busy every january, so they have decided to change our shifts.

my 8am-5pm shift now begins at 7:30am
and i am not allowed to leave until all of the calls in the queue are cleared (even though i do not work on the phones)

this means that i will be missing the first part of class everyday
and they are aware that i leave for school right after work

i am also required to do another extra 4 hours of overtime. i offered to do this during my breaks as i had done before, but instead i am being forced to come in on saturday.

i questioned my supervisor about this, as my manager doesn't arrive until 10am. he said that his hands are tied and that there is nothing he can do.

it really makes me question the ethics of a company who forces employees to work an extra 10 hours of overtime on top of their 40 hours.

i'll trade you jobs...
my boss won't let me come in early because they don't want to pay me overtime... i'd gladly work 50-70 hours a week if they let me... there's more than enough work that needs to be done, and i'm the only person crazy enough to do it all.

oh and i don't think a company can force you to work overtime. if they threaten to fire you because you turn down the extra hours, i'm pretty sure you can threaten them back with a lawsuit.

no they can't.
if you put your foot down and say no. what are they gonna do? fire you?
talk to human resources or someplace like that and they'll tell you where employers have to draw the line.

don't be such a pushover. employers make a living off people like you.

i've already contacted the employment standards branch
and yes, they can force you to do as much overtime as they want
as long as there are 32 consecutive hours free between your shifts

i'm not being a pushover
and yes, they can fire me

I agree with you bob, an employer can't force someone to work overtime, but saying no and following it up with threats of a lawsuit might just bring more trouble than working the extra few hours. I guess it all depends on how much you need the job.

Sorry to hear things aren't going well on the job front Nathaniel, not to mention also interfering with your school. I've been working 60 hours a week with only sunday off for the last 7 months . It was fine at first, but I'm sure I'll burn out pretty soon.

...anyways, hope things improve for you soon.

I didn't know that... I thought overtime was always an employee decision.
