Most porn is geared towards pleasing males. The female's are usually the focus of the whole thing, giving their appearance priority. Not to mention, even if the men in the production was considered attractive, the females will always be more apealing to male AND female veiwers. While there are extensive closeups of every inch of the female body, unless it includes intercourse or oral sex, there is not too much attention paid to the male . Visually, they are secondary players to the female(s) in the porn, creating and/or adding to the sexually stimulating ability and purpose of porn. This may sound sexist..? I don't know if that is the exact word, but I'm not being bias and putting women on a pedestal. It's a fact that *most* porn is targeted to interest males for the most part, and even when it comes to straight women alot of them are greatly turned on by the appearance and sound of women in sexual situations. Even if they aren't necessarily sexually attracted to females in "real life".
The fact that the women's appearance is also much more easily "improved" or altered than males may play a factor too. SERIOUS Make-up, surgery, accessories or clothing such as mega high heels or clothing that is known to arouse people; paired with the simple natural beauty and physical apeal of women makes for alot of easily accessible, good looking women, and the ease to create or improve the looks of any aspiring female pornstars; PLUS better pay, all make the pool of female porn actresses. Men, on the other hand, have to have a great cock and the ability and stamina to use it. This may be harder to find especially for a salary and fame that falls second to that available to females, so people making pornography may not have the room to be picky of males apearance or the ability to change it so easily, and have to take what they can get. ESPECIALLY when the focus isn't on the male.
Even the psychological aspect of having an average looking, or even plain unattractive male paired with a hot woman or women (plural :P) can't hurt porno sales. it gives the men watching a certain fantasy aspect, they are realistically able to imagine a guy like them scoring with a girl like THAT.
Now I don't know much about it, but from what I've seen the males in gay porn seem to be ALOT better looking. (From the sounds of it Andrew is confirming this assumption). The fact that the attention is solely on the males and their looks/body, and that there isn't as humongous of a demand for this type of pornography puts importance on the attractiveness of males and gives them room to be more picky about the looks of the male characters. Which makes sense to me. Excluding pornography specificly, or containing, Bears of course. In that case, what is possibly considered unatractive by most veiwers (excessive body hair, extra pounds, possibly mullets :P) is encouraged.
I think I've managed to overanalyze pornos .. oops. But now that I've thought about it, it makes complete sense. If women (well anyone) are dissapointed with the apearance of most men porn stars you'll have to check out gay porn which may or may not eliminate that problem (some people, even females, may not be too open to the thought of two men getting it on. But personally two attractive (insert either sex here)'s can/is considered hot. Which some of you, especially females might take a liking to as well if there wasn't such a social stigma surrounding it). Or possiby some "high class", high budget pornography. Avoiding the usual dime-a-dozen porno might eliminate things like mullets etc.
