if you're looking for movies, try winMX or DC++. the queues on winMX can be horrendous at times, but leave your client open for a few days and you'll get it eventually. pr0ns are pretty big on this network, and so is the international crowd. if you're into anime, you'll find it on MX.
DC++ is touch and go since it isn't multisourced, and the files aren't checksummed, as far as i know. but, you're likely to find fast connections here. the hub operators can be bitchy and have a tendency to kick people. if they do kick you, just don't go to their hub again. it's their loss, really. (i've been kicked for having audiogalaxy files before. two files that i had out of 20 gigs that i had shared. they lost out on 20 gigs worth of content that was likely not on their hub. their loss, not mine nor yours.) i've always had success with the lysekil sweden hub, so try that first.
for music, soulseek, without a second thought. the communities make the program what it is. there are dozens of specialized channels for any manner of genre of music that you can think of, and most are filled with knowledgable fans. as it is a lot like IRC, there is a bit of a script-kiddie element to the channels. but individual users can be ignored with a right click. it should also be noted that chanops rarely kick people, meaning you're not at the mercy of someone else's whim. searching and getting mp3s is also much simplified than an IRC fserve would be.
kazaa-lite (don't even think about the original) is a pretty handy little program. the multisourced/checksummed files mean that you get what you want fairly quickly. try to only download files that have many sources, as this helps ensure you're getting a correctly named file. kazaa is best for tv shows, movies, and software. the mp3s to be found are usually poppy and downloading full albums isn't as easy as it is in soulseek. but if all you want is the latest single, it should suffice.
there are plenty of other apps out there, but these are the only ones i use. please add your experiences.
