The death of pound
"On the one hand is the City of Vancouver's never-ending assault on Vancouver's nightlife. Three weeks ago the City of Vancouver mandated a 103 DB limit on the soundsystem at 7 Alexander. This was always a "soft-ceiling" at the club as Rich wished to tread lightly in his first year of operations, but at least he could let us crank the sytem when we brought in the big talent. Three weeks ago the city made 103 DB a "hard-ceiling" by mandating the use of a compressor on the club's system. Essentially, a compressor limits how loud a soundsystem can go. There is no room to push it. So we really had no choice but to call it a day.
Over the past five weeks we brought you DIESELBOY, JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY, BLIM and ZACHARIAH. That type of line-up deserves a good soundsystem. Given the line-up that we had arranged for September and October, there was simply no way we could continue with the static (sic.) quo. In closing the book on 7 Alexander, I must thank everyone who supported us in providing what was unequivocally the best line-up of talent at a weekly club night in Vancouver. Further thanks and respect should go to Rich and his entire staff as they really did their best to make things work for us. In the end, good ol' Phillip Owen won the battle, but he will surely lose the war." |

is it just me?
for the past month it's been seeming to me like rich mite be going broke or something... anyone else seeing this?
i mean... after summerlove, which totally flopped financially. i'm sure it was a "great" party, but rich had to cancel a lot of acts, including the fireworks just so he could break even... only 6,000 ppl showed, and i think he needed 10 - 15,000 just to break even... sunday sessions got pulled of 96.1 a couple weeks ago. and last week they pulled g-spot/planet aaj off... now the club...? i'd like to think in my head that rich is just getting sick of the scene, and is pulling out "while i'm still ahead" as he quoted on g-spot last friday... but it seems like there's a little more to it... there was an article in the vancouver sun the day after summerlove went off, and they interviewed rich, and he said summerlove mite not go off next year... from what i've been reading and hearing from friends, there's a lot more going on with rich... oh well... i never got to check out pound, not that big of a deal to me... BUT I REALLY WANTED TO GO TO SUNDAY SESSIONS ON SEPTEMBER 16TH!!!! so is the whole club just completely going under or what??? and when is the last nite!?! |

Well....
I'm not sure if they are closing it completely but i gather anyone looking to have a night there will realize exactly what this sound restriction means for the patrons. A club isn't too fun when your conversation can overpower the music. I've been in there since the restriction and it's not nearly as loud as it used to be. Even though there are many speakers in different locations it's not as crisp as it used to be and if the levels aren't watched carefully (for example when we played there in August) the sound becomes distorted and crackly even though the system can easily handle it.
It's a shame really... The other drawback/causer of that specific closure is that d&b , Jungle and breaks have heavy basslines and i think that this may have caused some of the complaints from tenants above.. I'll keep you posted if i hear any more juicy details... ~fORM |
