You know what REALLY pisses me off; DIETS!!!
I mean, I'm such a genetically skinny guy! I can either eat healthy or greasy, it don't make a difference! Almost my enitre family line has been filled with skinny, Italian men. I could eat pure trans-fats and wouldn't gain an ounce! Stop wasting research dollars on figuring out obesity. Help us poor skinny guys, fer crise sakes!!! :284: |

Atkins only works for some people who are very overweight but it's still not a healthy way of doing it. And if you are not very overweight then you will get very sick, I've seen it first hand. |

There's another great pillar of our society... the ever present threat of *LEGAL ACTION* That's a whole other rant. In the meantime, here's a comment from a certain frog princess... "i think the reason atkin's dieters are losing so much weight is cuz they burn so many calories talking about it" Pwned! Last edited by Grapes; Mar 06, 04 at 10:20 AM. |

The reason the diet is so popular is because it works and it works fast. Lets get one thing straight though... just because we have been eating carbs since the beginning of agriculture doesn't mean we have been eating refined simple carbs for that long. Sugar and white flour, white bread, white pasta have absolutely no nutritional value at all. All they do is raise your blood sugar level which in turn raises your insulin levels... Once your muscles and liver have stored as much glycogen as possible, it turns to fat. I personally think that its great that Mcdonalds is cashing in on it. There is nothing wrong with offering the public a healthy alternative to their regular menu. :)
complex carbs are good, refined carbs are bad no matter how good they taste :) Last edited by Leviathan; Mar 06, 04 at 11:48 AM. |

I've done it first hand, your wrong. I feel better than ever :)
The problem is there isn't a set definition or proof of what a "balanced diet" should consist of. What is unhealthy about eating eggs for breakfast, a big salad at lunch and some fish, brocoli/ cauliflower and beans for dinner? I don't really want to get into it though. I don't want to lose to much weight from talking about it :) Quote:

everyone is starting to believe that carbs are evil and bad for you. only simple carbs [like white bread] are the ones you should avoid. atkins is gross. if i'm going to go on any diet, i'd at least go for a heart healthy one. |

it's all bout limiting your calorie intake
if you don't eat enough carbs, your body will turn whatever excess protein you got and turn em into the carb you need...or something liek that, i't skinda rusty been awhile since ma kinesiology class either way, if you over eat it'll turn to fat, no matter what food group it is...if you under eat on one, your body will do what i t can to make what you're lacking outta whatever it got as long as it's not one of em essentiel nutrients wow :284: superstar |

So shouldn't our campaign be for healthier carbs?.. not their elimination altogether? Quote:
Now, let's say, just for the sake of argument, that I DON'T want to eat eggs every morning. The day after I enjoy this menu you've provided, what do I have for breakfast? A bowl of cereal? Or a bowl of meat chunks? And presuming I go with the meat chunks, am I allowed to pour milk on there?? Quote:

Totally! I admit I don't know much about this type of stuff but I think that this has to be one of the reasons for obesity, not to mention diabetes. As far as breakfast goes, I make pancakes and muffins out of soy protein powder and they turn out pretty decently :)

Its not necessarily about straight up calories. The body deals with different types of calories differently and quite frankly I think it all comes down to poop.
Your body can only hold so many carbs for energy storage... your muscles hold them and your liver does too. The kicker is only the ones from your liver can be used as energy for the rest of your body while the stuff stored in muscle is used strictly for the muscles. having high blood sugar levels and insulin levels as far as I know helps the carbs turn to fat when there is an over abundance. Carbs such as sugar obviously raise blood sugar levels and thus raise insulin levels. BUT protein does not effect your blood sugar level and I think takes longer and much more to turn to fat. as well. There were a few studies published last year, one I think in the New England Journal of Medicine that showed people on a low carb diet who ate more calories then people on a low fat low calorie diet lost more weight and had better cholesteral levels all around. The simple fact is there is not enough long term data to suggest the diet is bad OR good. It would be interesting to see a thermodynamic model of the human body. Quote:
